Default Random mute toggle

Sometimes a track decides to mute or unmute.
This alway happens with the same 'numbered' track in the same project.
If there are tracks after this track and you delete the track, the track that comes in its place shows the same behavior.

Toggle: If the track mutes, the next time you play it unmutes and vice versa.

It does not make a difference where you start in the project.

There is no mute automation.
There aren't even items on the tracks.

Temporary solution: make a new track, move items on the 'muted' track to the new track. Leave the 'muted' track empty, but do not delete it!

There's nothing in the project itself that would cause this. It sounds like you either have something (keyboard key, MIDI controller, OSC message, etc) inadvertently mapped to the action "Toggle mute for track 05" (or whatever number track it is), or you have a control surface enabled that is sending the track mute message. Those are the only things I can think of that would always affect the same numbered track in the project.

Hi Schwa,

Thanks for your reply!

After some further testing I found out it has to do with MIDI in and MIDI out via IAC (Mac).

No MIDI (or shortcut) is mapped to any action that is called "Track: Toggle mute for track" + any track number (nor any other action with the word mute in it).

The only thing that was enabled in MIDI settings was IAC bus 1 (Mac).

IAC bus 1 MIDI out:
Checking "Do not send reset messages" cleared MIDI output and stopped muting/unmuting the track.

IAC bus 1 MIDI in:
Unchecking "Enable input for control messages" stopped muting/unmuting the track.

Conclusion: one of the reset messages toggles the mute of a specific track.

To me this looks like a bug:
- Why is only one track muted and not other/all tracks?
- How can a single track be muted by MIDI if there is no mute action mapped to a midi controller? (See below for the list of messages sent out).

Or, maybe, I missing something???

Can you look in the REAPER resource directory (there is an action to open the directory) and post your reaper-kb.ini file here?

If you open Preferences/Control/OSC/web, are there any control surfaces listed there?

There are too many actions there to go through, but I'm pretty confident the explanation is either that you have something (key, controller, OSC message) mapped to some action that mutes (you have many custom mute actions installed), or that you have a control surface sending a mute message.

If you close REAPER and temporarily rename your reaper-kb.ini file and reopen REAPER and the problem goes away, you know for sure that you are inadvertently calling an action. I think this is most likely what's happening.

If you disable the web control surfaces and the problem goes away, you know for sure that you have a web control surface causing the track mute.

I found the culprit. It was a MetaGrid action that had a toggle mute inside.
I had forgotten about this.

Feature request: if filtering your search in the action list, let's say for the word 'mute', also show custom actions that contain anything with the word mute in it.

Thanks for putting me on the right track. Learned something new.
