Default mac with thunderbolt issue

I am using a Focusrite Sapphire Pro 40 to connect to a Mac with Thunderbolt (via firewire to thunderbolt adapter) but my Mac wont recognize the Pro 40-Ive tried both firewire ports on the Interface and a different firewire cable-rebooted-nothing works-is there something on a Mac that has to be changed to make this work? thanks to all!

- What OSX version are you running ?
- Have you connected the power adapter for the Focusrite ? (advised).
- Have you installed the latest Focusrite software ?:

If not, install this software and restart your mac afterwards.

Warm Regards.

Also, which adapter are you using?

Some 3rd party adapters don't work for audio.
