Item volume wrong upon rendering

Hey! I'm recording a project where I have a single media item (audio) whose volume I want to reduce. I've tried two ways of doing it. 1) Inserted a volume envelope on the track and lowered the volume for that item only. 2) Inserted a take volume envelope on the item itself and reduced the volume there. Both methods work fine for project playback, but for rendering they seem to do nothing. In all the years I've used Reaper I've never encountered this before. Help!
