Default VCA Fader Question

Is it possible to have a fader-only channel strip object to use as a VCA fader - no meter, pan, FX, routing etc..?

I'm currently using Radio theme, which I'm really happy with, but there doesn't seem to be any strip objects that don't have bells 'n' whistles.

If one exists somewhere, would it be possible (easy) to add it to the Radio theme?

Cheers, Andy

Yes, you can. I did it on my CubicPack bundle, available in the stash. But I added to the corresponding "VCA/GM" layout all the controls that are shown in the grouping matrix, so it's not exactly what you are looking for.

Beside this, I guess that you are talking about the 'Rado' theme... Will look at it to see if something could be quickly done : it's not that complicated but requires several changes in the rtconfig.txt file of the concerned theme, though...

Seems that I have something working, here, based on RADO-V4_full theme. I added two layouts ; the mcp layout being based on the already existing 'Narrow' one.

So, if you are still interested, I can put in the stash. Just let me know...

WOW... Thanks cubic13. That's exactly what I'm looking for.

Of course I have no idea how to add it to my theme, but I'm so happy that it's possible.

Thank you so much

Are you at ease with the zip/unzip process needed to modify a theme ? If so, I can join here, as attachments, first, the modified rtconfig.txt file and second, the 'VCA' subfolder needed for the mixer which should be put at the same level as the other ones in the theme resources folder.

Otherwise, I can also post the whole theme in the stash...

Just uploaded the modified version of this theme with the VCA layouts, as RADO-V4C.ReaperThemeZip (link : https://stash.reaper.fm/theme/1823/RA...ReaperThemeZip). In it, you won't find the added tools of the original theme : it's just a substitute of the RADO-V4.ReaperThemeZip file included in the original nickmoritz work. It looks like this :

Usage - it works as any other .ReaperThemeZip : just put it in the Color Themes subfolder of your Reaper installation. You should have, for both tcp and mcp, a "20. VCA" available layout. After this (guess you know it, already, but it could be useful for other users of this theme), the involved tracks should be setted in the Grouping matrix as shown below - VCA InstrFd being the actual VCA track and Instruments being the VCA slaved one which, in this case, is a folder :

Hope this will be useful for you. Let me know how things are going...

Hi cubic13

I can't open "My Theme.ReaperTheme", which is my modified RADO theme (I changed a lot of colours before and saved it), because it doesn't have a zip extension. So I don't know how to add these fader objects.

What should I do?

First, unzip the RADO-V4C.ReaperThemeZip download. You should have now two objects in the resulting RADO-V4C folder :
- RADO-V4C.ReaperTheme : this is the file that can be directly modified by the user, with the 'Theme tweak/configuration' window.
- RADO-V4C subfolder, which contains all the resources of the theme : rtconfig.txt and graphic files, mainly.

From this :

1) rename the first one to something else (to keep it as a backup, just in case...), i.e. _RADO-V4C.ReaperTheme
2) Put your My Theme.ReaperTheme file in the same first RADO-V4C folder, so to be at the same level as the previously renamed file.
3) Rename it as RADO-V4C.ReaperTheme.
4) Zip again BOTH the resources subfolder and the new RADO-V4C.ReaperTheme together and change the extension of the resulting zip file to .ReaperThemeZip.
5) Copy it to the Color Themes subfolder of your Reaper installation.

I have tested your .ReaperTheme file, using the procedure described above, and it seems to work. So, that should do it...

Default A little update for a more comfortable use with Reaper 5...

The time working with RADO-V4 for the VCA layouts has shown me how great this theme is ; probably one of the best ever done for Reaper. So, I couldn't resist... As some things were lacking for a comfortable use of it with Reaper 5 and, obviously, it will no longer be maintained, I made and just uploaded a new version of RADO-V4C which has, beside the previously added VCA layouts, the following :
- the item envelope icons introduced in reaper 5.0,
- the latch preview buttons introduced in Reaper 5.22 (about this, sorry in advance for the 'global preview' display : it's not at the same lavel as the other global envelope modes display but I simply don't have the tools to reproduce them...),
- a completely new tranport bar management. This one was, IMO, not at the same level as the other parts of the theme, so I thought that a full rewrite of it would be better (with my own logic, I admit), this, while preserving all the graphics originally made for it. I had to change the status control font used from 'Verdana' to 'Tahoma' ; the former one was no longer fitting, as this control has been redimensioned during the process. Among other optimizations, we can now center the transport controls.

The result is as shown below, with the 'Compact' layout of the transport bar :

I was tempted to change several other things, especially the kaleidoscope look of both the tcp/mcp panels, but well, I opted to preserve as much as possible the original nickmoritz work. After all, it's not mine and proceeding further seems to me like opening a can of worms...

Hope this will be useful for some of you, as users of this theme with Reaper 5...

...and while we are at it, I have a Walter problem on this work. In the 'compact' transport layout, I have the following instructions block that defines the behavior of trans.rate.fader, trans.rate and trans.curtimesig controls :

set trans.rate.fader.fadermode w<810 [1] [-1]
set trans.rate.fader w<654 [0] w<810 [602 14 29 29 0 0 0 0] [602 5 207 22 0 0 1 0]
set trans.rate.fader ?trans_docked [602 5 207 22 0 0 0 0]
set trans.rate.fader !trans_flags&2 [0]
set trans.rate !trans_docked w<722 [0] w<810 [639 12 62 32 0 0 0 0] [815 5 62 22 1 0 1 0] [815 5 62 22 0 0 0 0]
set trans.rate.margin [6 0 0 0 0]
set trans.rate !trans_flags&2 [0]
set trans.curtimesig !trans_docked ?trans_flags&2 w<770 [0] w<810 [709 12 40 32 0 0 0 0] [883 5 40 22 1 0 1 0] w<663 [0] w<810 [602 12 40 32 0 0 0 0] [602 5 40 22 0 0 0 0] ?trans_flags&2 [883 5 40 22 0 0 0 0] [602 5 40 22 0 0 0 0]
set trans.curtimesig !trans_flags&4 [0]

This work as expected excepting the test on trans_docked, a predefined scalar variable supposed to let the Walter script react accordingly to the docked/undocked state of the transport bar. The problem here is that, no matter how I try to use it, the test doesn't occur. Three different ways trying to get something with it and three failures...
The result is that, when the transport bar is docked, the two last controls are displayed to the extreme right of the docker with the fader stretched outrageously to reach them and I wanted to avoid this. This was my first attempt to use the trans_docked variable and I can't say it's a success ; maybe I'm missing something but, if not, I would really like to know more about its actual usefulness. So, if any skilled themer could help on this case...

New (and last...) version of RADO-V4C just uploaded : added adjustments to make it comfortably usable with Reaper 5.x...

- Straighten up master.tcp track management with a more clear pan/width controls and the use of the tcp_master_minheight header parameter (introduced circa v5.0, I think...) which has allowed me to reduce the minimal height of the tcp master track down to 30 pixels : could be useful, as only the meters remain visible with this height.
- Reshaped the pan/width management in both tcp and mcp as there were some incoherencies : first, it's now more easy to see clearly which tracks are using stereo/dual pan from the others and, second, the mcp layouts have been reorganized in a more coherent way (I think...). I also added, as I could, the missing pan/width labels in the master.mcp track.
- Optimized a little more the 'Compact' layout of the transport bar, mainly the selection control display when both the playrate and signature ones are set as not visible.

That's all, folks !
