I exclusively use ableton for making mixes...
...to me, that's where it shines, detecting every beat and bar automatically, and aligning non-metronome recordings to a constant time. I can mix Elvis Presely and Dinosaur Jr with Skrillex and Deadmouse and never have to adjust a single transient or marker. I know reaper has stretch markers, but how close are we to having reaper detect the beats and measures, the relativitely of bleach beat to the measure, and automatically aliging it to a constant tempo?

Yea, Reaper can do those things, but not as easily or as well. Ableton was built from the ground up precisely to do what you describe, whereas we only recently got stretch markers and they almost always require a bit of fiddling. Not to mention tempo mapping a project in Reaper with both MIDI and audio can be a veritable nightmare. Live has the upper hand here, no question.

Ableton's markers algo is only a guesstimate anyways, its not always correct. It can't be.

were talking about 2 different things here
A) bpm detection
B) automatic stretch to grid
so if people say , THAT is good i would be nice to know which "THAT" they actually mean
the newest ableton live also has far better re-spampling than reaper (it was a problem with older versions many legacy songs i dragged in had distrorted bass after making them dj ready(strecth to grid) ) so i think loading old songs and align transients to grid quick and dirty is better done in ableton ...

I think they use SoX internally now, basically.
