Default Reaper OSC-layout for new Android OSC-Controller

Hi guys,

I am the developer of OSC-Commander (http://osc-commander.com/), a new OSC-Controller for Android 4.0+. I have begun developing this application because I was unsatisfied with the available OSC apps for Android. In the meantime, TouchOSC was also released for Android which is known as a decent OSC controller. But even though, I think there are things to do better.

Till now I have focused my own layout development on TotalMixFX as I use it very much myself (e.g. it graphically displays EQ settings, which is unique afaik).

However, I also own Reaper and would like to make some nice layouts for it as well. I must admit that I'm not a very experienced Reaper user thus I am asking you.

What features would you like, especially some, which are not supported by available OSC-Controller but by Reaper?

Thanks in advance :-)
Best regards,
Burtan

Have a look at the current state of the layout:

@forum admin: can you enable image resizing with the [img] tag?

Since I just updated my samsung Galaxy Tab2 to android 4.2, this is welcome news!

I am currently using three Korg nano devices for mixing and drum MIDI input, but would much rather be using my e-kit with a remote transport/record and track arming system on a tablet.
Simple stuff, but it would make MY life a great deal easier with just that basic a layout.
All else would be a bonus.

Forgot to mention I ALSO run an RME soundcard with 16 I/O via ADAT, so th initial template would be very useful, too.

You can try the OSC-Commander TRIAL then to check if your device works well. I have also listed some devices, which are known to work well in my forum. Have fun with OSC and TMFX ;-)

I also think that I have a rough idea about how OSC works in Reaper. Looks reasonable :-).

I will create a simple mixer layout first...

@Reaper developers
Can I get track vu meters for left and right, if it is a stereo track?

I can just find:
TRACK_VU n/track/vu n/track/@/vu
I would appreciate a left and right vu. When its mono, both sides could send the same param.

Hi,

I would like to make a "realistic" looking layout. @ Reaper developers, am I allowed to use your graphics for it?

I'd also have several ideas to improve Reaper OSC

Hello Burtan,

Looks cool! You are welcome to use the built-in REAPER theme images, as long as you don't claim that the images are yours.

The latest prerelease version of REAPER includes controller feedback for left and right channel VU metering:

Oh dear

Trial version is crashing every time - tried to leave a message on your webpage forum but even after I registered the site is not recognising me as either ivansc or ivancarling@xxxxxxxx.net

Maybe later on in the development process I will try again.

Hi Ivan,

I'm sorry for your troubles. The app crashed because it ran out of memory. The amount of memory available for apps is individual for any device. OSC-Commander stores all active layouts in memory for fast recall.

I will upload a new version with just one active layout at first start. This should solve your problem. However, don't check all layouts to be active.
Also deinstall the old version before installing the new one.

I hope to deliver a more sophisticated solution later on.

Hm. I never got past the initial grey screen, so I have no idea what is going on - I did clear all running apps (using cleansweep) and try it again with the same results. Awaiting the revised upload.

Oh I am on an 8gb Samsung Galaxy Tab2 with android 4.2
Also have a 32gb SD memory card installed. Could this be causing conflicts at all?

It's not the storage capacity which is limiting, it is the amount of RAM which can be used by an application (which is not the total amount of RAM). This amount differs among devices. I am currently testing with a Nexus 10 and a Nexus 5, as well as some virtual devices. Loading all default layouts in cache on my Nexus 10 (with 2560x1600) needs about 125mb. On your device it should need about 50-60mb (with 1280x800).
You have not gotten past the splash screen, because the device reaches the memory limit during loading all layouts.
The new version (which should be available now) will only load one layout on first start. It also requests a larger amount of memory from the device. This might help as well, also some device do not support this either.

I think I can decrease the amount of RAM used by cached layouts, which are not displayed, drastically in the future, but this will need some developing time. Please stay patient so far.

Yep - already figured out it was process memory, only reason I mentioned the SD card was in case there was any possible conflict with addressing the external SD ram whilst OSC-Commander was running.
I will give it another go!

The layout was updated and now needs a custom .ReaperOSC file to be fully functional.

http://osc-commander.com/wp-content/...nder.reaperosc

The transport bar behaviour was improved and default value recall on double tap added to faders and knobs.

Is this app designed for tablets only? I am trying to get the trial going on a LG Optimus G Pro and can't seem to get anywhere with it. When I try to load a layout all I get is a black/dark grey screen.

Hi Troy,

it should work on phones as well. Have you changed the layout settings before starting the viewer or was the screen black right "out of the box".

Hi again, Burtan! Back for another try with OSC Commander. I just bought (yes I finally spent some money on faith) the latest version and have run it briefly on the Galaxy tab2 and it does seem to be loading properly. Next step is to figure out how I get it to talk to TotalMix and then Reaper!

I suppose I should start by RTFM....

Hi ivansc,
though I surely highly appreciate your trust in the paid version, I just want to mention that the trial provides the same functionality. So nobody is forced to spent money before making sure that everything is working as intended.

If you have further problems or questions, Please let me know.

I believe in helping small developers out when I can afford to do so.
Since I have never really been a code head, I appreciate the efforts of those who can do it.
I wont be able to really get to grips with this till I get back to the UK in a couple of weeks, so I am going to crash on with the manual etc in readiness.
Somehow I just know I am going to have a few questions....

That's indeed an interesting device. Have you used the TRIAL or the full version? I did not update the TRIAL to the most recent version yet, although I doubt that this is the reason.

Burtan,
Could you make available a sample template, this would help me a lot.
I have a little trouble with the "osc settings".
Thank you in advance

So at the moment the widgets with images do not work with the 22" acer?

Here are some sample layouts:

Hi Frederik,

I've just installed Commander Trial, working and syncing well, some faders and buttons doesn't work, because of trial limitation I suppose.
You've done great job, and many people will start using it if they get info about.

I need it to RME TotalMix control, anyway, do you think about work at new realistic layouts? RME, Reaper?

Regards,
Tomek

Hi Tomek,

unfortunately I'm not allowed to use the graphics from TMFX. If you have any ideas to improve the Reaper layout though, you are welcome ;-)

Hi, very interested in this.

Are the users able to tweak the layouts?
I am currently trying to use an Android phone to control both TotalMix FX and REAPER. One page for each one.

Have you got a template that have both included?
Thanks!

The TMFX template can be downloaded at www.osc-commander.com. I have not uploaded the Reaper layout because of the embedded pictures. I'm not sure if I am allowed to do so.

Hey Burtan...great programs.
Here is what my first layout looks like.
Based on a theme I created.
Still learning about OSC etc... so it's a WIP.

(time & BPM are faked in this image as its from the editor)
(not sure how to take a screenshot of a tablet yet)

Nice, looks great!
Screenshots are usually taken on android devices by pressing a combination of the hardware buttons (e.g. power + volume -/+).
