Which Audio Device to use and how to set them up?
Hey everybody,
I recently installed the native Linux version of Reaper on Ubuntu 18.04. As options for the audio devices I get: -PulseAudio -JACK -DummyAudio -ALSA If I try JACK I get the message 'There was an error opening the audio hardware.' For PulseAudio I get a signal but the input via my Steinberg UR22mkII is very delayed. DummyAudio obviously doesn't output anything. For ALSA everything works fine. I get an output and I can record without any notable delay, but the problem is that as long reaper is opened using ALSA my computer cannot output sound in any other application neither Firefox, Spotify etc. Which Audio Device should I use? Why does Jack not work and if I should use ALSA how can I can get audio output for multiple applications? |

For jackd use, this webpage lays out the details
and config settings that will get your audio in sync without delays, among other things: http://libremusicproduction.com/arti...g-started-jack This one for jusing jackd with pulseaudio feeding it: https://askubuntu.com/questions/5721...e-audio-device adding kxstudio repositories to your synaptic package manager willl help solidify your software selection choices, the commands to do that can be copy/pasted from here: https://kxstudio.linuxaudio.org/Repositories Good choice going with Reaper! Won't be regretting it. |

I always use ALSA. Works out of the box here.
Because I have had lots of troubles configuring and setting jack server stuff. |

When application uses Pulseaudio it needs to tell it what latency it wants. Apparently Reaper does not do that so Pulseaudio uses some default latency settings that can be quite high.
But latency can be given by starting reaper with following command line: PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=10 ./reaper With that you can tune latency value for your environment. |
