Default Dolby Digital 5.1 AC3 Channels

Can someone please tell me what each of the six channels are in Dolby 5.1?

I have video from a Sony Handycam DCR-SR100 that records Dolby Digital 5.1 audio in AC-3 format with MPEG-2 video.

I can tell for sure that CH6 is the subwoofer channel, but the others are unclear.
This is what I think they are from the audio:
CH1: L (Left)
CH2: R (Right)
CH3: LS (Left Surround)
CH4: RS (Right Surround)
CH5: C (Center)
CH6: LFE (Low Frequency Effects)

All literature I've found indicates L, C, R, LS, RS, LFE, but the audio files with some video I recorded indicate as above. I couldn't find a definitive answer by googling.

ello-so it looks like your using win- try 1st goto win sound/playback+recording devices (sound properties) and check playback speakers configuration there- it will play a test tone for each speaker-either for 5.1 or 7.1>> that's the way files will playback anyway...
something like,
l/r
c/s
rl
rr
sl
sr.. or it does on 1 win10 system.. 5.1 just leaves out sl+sr.
yeah?
reaper also renders what channels you set in an order of 6,or 8channels..

Thanks, Bri1.

However, I don't have a 5.1 system connected to my computer. I'm trying to identify the channel order of the 6 channels of an existing AC3 audio file embedded in an MPG file that was recorded using my camcorder. I'm assuming that the channel configuration is standardized, but I cannot seem to find the information on the web.

There are actually a few different "standards".

The most common is SMPTE, which is:

1 - L
2 - R
3 - C
4 - LFE
5 - Ls
6 - Rs

Film is another:

1 - L
2 - C
3 - R
4 - Ls
5 - Rs
6 - LFE

The last that I'm blanking on the name of is:

1 - L
2 - R
3 - Ls
4 -Rs
5 - C
6 - LFE

Hi there,

Dolby Digital 5.1 should be L R C Lfe Ls Rs, the ITU/SMPTE standard order.

There is no doubt that channel 6 = LFE in the files that I have.
