Search for "rename", obviously.

Ok I found it. The reason i was confused, is that it was referring to items as takes, which i'm sure means something different. But it now conflicts with custom action I'm using which is renaming midi items on track after creating new midi item, and that script renames all names on track to track name. If i don't use it, I am ending up with such thing as "Piano untitled Midi Item 1" or alternatively would have to manually rename item every time I create it. What to do? All I want really is simple name for newly created tracks and option to rename together selected items if i want too.

Items can consist of takes, but they're basically items in their own right.

There's a tweak you can do using a language pack, where you can strip away the "untitled MIDI item" suffix completely.

There's auto-rename action which you can use to rename all items on the track sequentially, using track name and incrementing the number on every new item. Quite useful.

I know about takes, just when some actions are called takes and some are items, it get confusing.

Which language pack to download?

I know about that script, or at least know of sws script, but it doesn't work on creation of item : every newly created item is called name-01.

There's a langpack available on landoleet, i8n subfolder.

As for doing things on creating an item, I suppose you could do that only via script, and it won't work via mouse modifiers (since you can't set a custom action for "track left drag" context). Langpack is probably a better solution (although you won't get numbering).

So what i got to do now? Download LP template, and start rebuilding that?

Was just looking into batch renaming and found this. Still not sure how to do it, or what the syntax is to use for the SWS-RenamePresets.txt file in order to set up my own preset to strip the "-glued" from the end of filenames after I have glued a bunch of items and want to remove that part of the filename before prepping for delivery of assets.

If anyone knows how to make this work, please chime in.

I don't see a way of storing presets though. Also if you have an item with multiple takes, it'll only affect the takes that are selected (only one take of an item can be selected at a time), so there's that limitation.
Oh wow. That looks like it'll do just what I need. Thanks! Also, I did manage to figure out, using the auto rename action, based on the syntax options given when you run it, how to create a preset in the presets txt file to rename all selected items on a track to the trackname with incremental numbering, which also works for my current needs. Case closed!

Lol I was redoing my post because I was trying to get that specific SWS thing to work. But I'm glad that other script works for you instead! I couldn't get SWS Autorename to save a preset which just strips a particular string of text, since it only works with the specific "replace tokens" (and none of them allow for just a removal of a particular string of text). But yes, you can make it rename items/takes based on track names anyway (which would strip all of the item/take names). So I learned something today too.

As of 2021, you can now select a bunch of items, press F2 for Item Properties, then type a name; the new name will be applied to all selected items. No scripts or extensions necessary
