Default Reaper Playback Latency (Buffer?)

Hi Guys!
I have a question about the responsivity of Reaper aka the latency that occours when I hit play in Reaper: It takes about 1-2 seconds before the audio starts. That really sucks!
With a bigger count of tracks that delay can increase significantly and this is really a problem!

Nobody have a similar issue ?

I'm on a 2 x 2.66 Ghz Dual-Core intel Xeon with Snow Leo
All in 32bit

That is not latency, it is media buffering. You might have a slow or fragmented hard drive, or perhaps the media is in a compressed format.

How much of the HD is still empty?

If no reason is found, it might be worth it to double check that you have the latest version of Reaper and reset Reaper to factory settings.

The issue happens with ALL my HDs... doesn't matter if internal or external.
I really have the last version of Reaper!

Maybe upload some screen shots of your preferences.

Default Reaper Playback Latency (Buffer?)

What Block Size are you using?

Under Reaper > Preferences > Audio > Device.

Try upping this Block Size, and see if this improves it.

Default Playback delay - possible solution?

I had this same problem. There are many posts on this forum about this but none of the suggestions worked in my case. I am outputting to speakers via USB to an Alesis USB mixer. Closing all other programs helped a bit (delay reduced from 1.5 beats to 1). I did notice though that I had no playback delay when I played back through digital headphones (plugged into the computer's USB port). Decided to change my USB cable (which was pretty old) which connected the Alesis for a brand new one. This worked immediately and completely eliminated the playback delay. So unless this goes wrong again I reckon it was the cable. Hope this works for you.

Default Change audio system to DirectSound

In my case, changing the audio system from AISO to DirectSound completely fixed the problem. (Options > Preferences > Audio > Device > Audio System). I have Windows 7 x64 and am running REAPER x64 4.402.

I had about a 10-20 second playback delay before. Now, playback is basically instant.

i'm doing some testing on Reaper with 32-bit bridged plugs... I noticed an 8 second delay with a project with 12 plugs on one track. Then I noticed that all those plugins were actually open in their own windows... you see it down in the task bar. Closing those windows brought me back to no delay on playback. Thank the high heavens.

I haven't used Reaper enough to know whether this is due to bridged plugins, or to an excessive number of open windows. I'm guessing it's the bridge issue, however.

Thus, the program uses a higher value.
change the value to 128 or whatever you want and check it.

In OS X there is no ASIO.

Thx axel. Odd, but today I didn't have the same problem... I believe I duplicated my testing scenario... but now I'm not so sure. This'll take some more testing. It is specifically bridged plugins that are minimized in the task bar... at least I thought.

One thing I did notice today is exactly how much CPU some of these UIs use... even if the effect is bypassed... just having the UI visible. Wow.

Thx for the tip. I'll keep it in mind.

Default possible solution

Hi,

I've been having the same issue for a while but pretty sure i found a fix..

The problem lays in "flush fx when stop"..make sure this is enabled.

See screenshot below. This solved my problem.

Cheers!

hey I had a similar problem with playback delay. The box "request sample rate" was unchecked, I just checked the box and it solves my problem.

I tried all the solutions above and in similar threads and here's what I found:
my once blazing/now sluggish iMac running Reaper has been returned to blazing fast glory by modifying the settings of Air Display which I use to run my iPad as a remote. Say NO to HiDPI and Retina resolutions!!! SO happy now!

Where do you find this setting? I couldn't find anything resembling this under my display settings. Is it even on an iMac? It's plausible to me that Mavericks might have a default setting like this that would interfere with performance, and I'd really like to resolve this myself.

Isn't 10 playback buffers alot when the printed default is 3? wouldn't that be creating the huge playback delay?
