Default Finding vlc video codec but not displaying in video window

Hi all,

I have an mp4 movie and the the codec appears to be found as it should, but I still don't see anything in the video window. I get this from "Options"->"Video file item properties" at the top of the video window:

Length: 4:19.242
Video: 640x480@29.97fps, Aspect=1.00, Decoding format=I420/YV12
Audio: 48000Hz 2ch 32bps

Using VLC decoder (v3.0.x)
Video: 640x480, h264, 29.97fps
Audio: 48000hz, 32bps, 2ch, mp4a

Loaded from: C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC

It seems like I should see it, since it seems to find the codec.

Anyone have a suggestion? Thanks!

Hi Steve R,

Does the file play in VLC media player outside of REAPER? If it does play externally then the issue might be method in which the video is rendered within REAPER.

With the video placed on the timeline go to the REAPER Preferences (Ctrl+P) and go to Media -> Video/Import/Misc and select the difference options under Output (e.g. DirectShow EVR, DirectShow EVR - Force YV12, etc.), each time click Apply and, to be sure that the change has taken effect, move the play cursor to a new position on the video.

If none of the Output options work then try updating your graphics card/chip drivers.

If none of the advice above works, then download MediaInfo and open the video file up and post the Text or HTML output here.

I'm also struggling with VLC as a render option.

I know Reaper is seeing VLC codecs in preferences, but when I open the render window, I'm not sure what format I should be seeing for VLC.

The OP's issue was with not being able to view video, that was being decoded by VLC, in the Video Window (From the menu View -> Video). My reference to "render" was in the context of display rendering i.e. the method utilised to display (or render) the video on the screen within the Video Window e.g. DirectShow EVR (Enhanced Video Renderer).

Your issue seems to be related to the exporting of video via the Render to File window. From what I can tell, the Render to File window does not utilise VLC Player to export

you could try ffmpeg as a decoder to see if it is any different. Just install, then put it in front of vlc in the preferences.

ffmpeg is used for render AND decoding on Windows. You can change the decoder priority to ffmpeg in the preferences. options/media/video ... -> video decoder priority

To OP: Please check under (options/media/video ...available decoders) if your decoders are properly installed/available. If VLC is absent it could be the problem. (wrong installing path ect.)
