Eric is a friend of mine who I recorded an album with a couple years ago. There is a lesson to be learned here: Your equipment can be insured and replaced, but your recording media is a gigantic point of failure that is incredible vulnerable. An off-site backup solution is ESSENTIAL. Either a cloud-based service where you sync your media drive with a server on the internet, or a system such as backup tapes or a removable hard drive that you can take out of your studio and store in a physically separate location.

If the data doesn't exist in at least 3 locations, then it doesn't exist at all.

How much do you want to bet it was inside job? It's obviously someone who's been in their studio before and knew exactly what to go after.

Carbonite is also a nice backup method.

You just right click any file and click "Carbonite" essentially and it backs up that file in their servers. I think its like $60 a year.

Or you can just tell it to back up everything under a directory. So I keep all of my Reaper projects in sub-directories of a directory that I've designated; I never have to think about it or worry about there being an off-site backup. Every file I create or update is automatically backed up. Plus, if I need to, I can pull the files down to any other computer. The peace of mind and ease of use are easily worth the money.

Here's a list of all the gear that was stolen. If you guys can, keep an eye out on your local craigslist or other classified or used gear web sites for the following:

For those who keep data locally but in several different locations (or hard drives perhaps), I would strongly recommend encrypting the vital stuff. So even if a hard drive does get stolen the data won't be of much use to anyone else. Of course, you'd still be required to keep the data backed up on an external server somewhere so that you still have access to it if your drives/gear goes missing but at least there won't be somebody else out there with a hard drive full of your music.

One particular program I would suggest is TrueCrypt. It's freeware, it's cross-platform (Windows, Mac, Linux) and it's really fantastic.

Gearslutz thinks that I'm behind a proxy server (I'm not), and won't let me register... Could someone post it there for me, perhaps? You could use my template posting from http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewto...366741#4366741
