Would love it if reaper could read and import media from m3u playlists. (There's a ReaPlaylister plugin, but it's a bit underdeveloped as an all purpose player, and it doesn't create media items.)

i think you can tell reaper to toss the reapeaks somewhere else. imo this should be by default. they ought to be dumped in a folder like temp by default in my strong opinion.

I wonder would it be possible to set up a macro to create and arm a new track so I could record multiple takes without returning to the computer...
Oh hang on,reaper overlays new takes automatically.Bingo!

Maybe already mentioned, but thought I would throw this one in the mix.

Set up a MIDI device with 'enable input for control messages' checked that has both faders/knobs and BUTTONS. Using buttons basically gives you an instant switch from 0-127 with nothing in the middle.... which works great for 'on/off' type of situations (and a TON of other fun stuff.... like panning hard left then hard right with zero middle ground on the fly.

I even mapped a button to the 'threshold' for the 'transient detection settings' preference. If you also have 'treat media item edges as transients' checked, then you basically get an on/off switch for tabbing to transients. I'm coming from PT (12+ years) and I use this feature ALL the time. In PT I would normally have 'tab to transients' off, so I can quickly move around various items/regions simply by tabbing. Then if I need to edit some transient heavy material, switch it on.

Works perfectly in Reaper.

Default Are these tips on "Google Docs"?

Hi,

I just went to what I thought is the correct page:

https://docs.google.com/Doc?docid=0A...cDJ6M2dt&hl=en

All I see is a link that leads back to here.

Is there, in fact, a document with these tips...or has that been deleted?

Peace,

K8ch

You're right, the google doc got wonky somehow.
I just updated it with the backup I had on my HD.

Not all tips listed here are in that doc though, as it was only updated until a certain point and the backup is also a bit older.

If anyone has a more recent version or wants to update feel free...

Hello everyone, My First post!

A lot of great tips in this topic. I'm a musician/engineer/producer living in Sweden, and I just changed my DAW from Cubase to Reaper and i'm loving the way it's customizable and intuitive.

At last a DAW that is working with you, instead of you obeying to it's rules.

So glad I found you.

Have a great day!

Welcome Tortoise! Glad to have another swede on this forum!
I also change DAW after using both Cubase and Samplitude. But IMO, Reaper exceeds them all BIG time!!

hej hej! Yes! I'm really new to Reaper, but after a couple of days with a good video tutorial I seem to be ready to really start working with it.

So far the only downside I've experienced is that that some plug-ins (especially Reverbs of different kinds - mainly ReaVerb and Aether) are hard to use when you're tracking - the sound getting all static and messed up. Even when i'm only recording 1 track into a new project. I've tried diferent buffer settings and still it appears from time to time. This i have never been a problem in other DAWs I've worked with. Any thoughts?

Not a big thing, I can easily live with that.

Have´nt had that problem. I use mostly EZmix2 and before that I frequently used Kjaerhus Classic Reverb (for tracking) and had zero problems.
Strange, but sorry, can´t help there.

Thanks, You gave me an idea with EZmix2. I'll try it out. Maybe use it on all tracking sessions - just fast simple presets - and later replace it with my usual plug-ins in the arranging/mixing stages.

I do need a faster workflow with my tracking as it is. Sometimes tweaking a desirable sound can stop you from concentrating on the actual recording takes.

Good tip.

It just love the EZmix concept, great presets and super audioqaulity!!

This is my mix of Kevin Reeves - Mother. I used 5 tracks with one or more EZmix2 on each channel

http://soundcloud.com/stiffmeister/kevin-reeves-mother

The vocal track is with one EZmix2 and the preset I use is "Ambient vocal".

Hi Charango, and thanx for the kind words!!
When I mix songs I pan allmost all the instrument
Tracks to either left or right except for drums and bass
To leave the vocals with more "Air" so it stands out in the mix.
So it's actually just one ezmix2 on the vocal track and the preset
Ambient vocal.

What i did, is the custom action which selects item and time automatically without "shift" key and assign it to just left mouse click

Why I never thought about adding a second keyboard? I was supposing a computer could only use only one keyboard! heh! Very nice to be able to record from another room without the help of another person at the mixer.

Why not use Rea plugs when tracking? They are much less CPU heavy than Aether (the beast).

If you check out ReaVerbate and ReaDelay you may find that they are Ok to use when tracking (not printing to a track, just monitoring).

These are mostly for computer/Reaper multi-noobs (like me). My setup is HP laptop Win7 Reaper 4.25/x64. Might be relevent to what I say...

Arrange your desktop in a neat logical fashion (i.e. drag your icons around). I keep all my Reaper-related literature shortcuts in one spot. Especially the Quick-start Guide (available from the Reaper download site/included in reaper program files/available in HELP menu) is great to have handy when you are first starting out. I also have a shortcut assigned to the "tips" .txt file included with Reaper. Lots of good basic stuff in there. You can put PDFs in the HELP menu, but I like to use the desktop. WIN+d and a double click and I got what I want.

You can get both "Unleashed" and "Reamix" in PDF form for about $20. I'd say its worth it.

Get SWS extentions. Now. Instant power, why wouldnt you. (If "Up and Running" and SWS makes your life easier, contribute financially to those guys so they can continue on.)

Get the hang of using project directory folders before beginning any important work. You'll see some headaches on the forum related to this.

Use the filter on the Action list-"?" to find goodies related to what you're looking for.

Dragging some windows to the top of the screen makes them explode full screen. To the side for half screen. I use this for the MIDI editor. You can stash some windows on the side/bottom if you are careful. A synth I use has a UI window that disappears when it loses focus unless i push the pin in. There might be an option to prevent that, but I dont know...

You can set your Windows toolbar to "autohide" to free up valuable screen space. It also obscures the bottom of the blown up window described above. Sometimes it doesnt want to come back, but changing the view (i.e. minimizing or something) usually gets it back.

I gotta go get a mouse with a middle click now...

And I would say Reaper's plugins are 'more' than "Ok"! They are very good, definitely good enough to be used for more than "just monitoring".

Why would you print ReaVerb when he's got Aether. And why would you want to print a delay when tracking? To each his own of course, but you can't undo it later. Some plugins are good to mix with, yet I can't get ReaComp to give me the same vibe as IK's Black 76, ReaVerb doesn't sound as lush as Aether, Echoboy offers more creative options than ReaDelay, Sonnox limiter gives me more transparency & I sure can't do in Reaper what DSM, Reelbus & VCC offer. Reaper's plugs are good, yet there are better offerings from other devs.

I Disagree.

They should be with the media files (as is the default) and should be transferred with the media files if the project is sent or given to another REAPER user. Just set the default media file directory to be a sub-folder of your project directory, ie "\audio files"

I have some projects where having the peak files saved with the audio saves ten or fifteen minutes or peak file regeneration on loading -there are that many GB of audio.

They are directly related to the project's media files and should stay with them, not defaulting to be hidden away so they are not copied and archived with the project. If you have the media files in their own subfolder, you don't generally have to venture in there, you just include the folder in any save or transfer.

Don't try and change the default sensible way of doing it to confuse new users and disrupt tidy-minded workflows just because your own projects are so small or sparse as to not notice the need for peak files.

For those of use who shift 100+GB media file folders around 15+TB workstations, we'd like the very significant peak files to remain with the audio files on the audio drives, not some common drive not set up for audio data and unrelated to the recordings being processed or copied.

I'm all for workflow improvements in the software design, but this would be a pointless, retrograde step.

I wish i could create a few more subfolders relative to the project folder actually, as i DO venture into my Audio Files folder for many projects and find the peak files annoying.

I would like to create (in addition to my Audio Files folder per project) "Peak Files" and "Session Backups". I know there's already a FR for session backups that's been around for ages so it seems this is unlikely to happen anytime soon.

Would love it if reaper could read and import media from m3u playlists. (There's a ReaPlaylister plugin, but it's a bit underdeveloped as an all purpose player, and it doesn't create media items.)
I use kmplayer. it's a korean player. most english speaking people don't know of its existence, but it is fully english. by far the best media player i've ever seen. plays everything, even 3d, and it looks amazing.

ya, a peaks, and backups folder would be amazing.

I'd definitely agree with the Alt drag item without moving it. It's so helpful for editing drums. I was super pumped once I saw the FX wet signal pot in the top right corner of the FX window when they released Reaper 4.
