Default Music for film

I've been approached via email by an independent web-based film person who wants to use my music in a film (he's heard it on soundclick) - all mixed and recorded by REAPER, naturally.

I wondered if anyone has any suggestions/experience of dealing with this type of project and what it entails?

I would want to retain copyright, but what rights do I grant them?

I don't see money changing hands!

Any thoughts appreciated.

I've had my music used in a few films and documentaries and have maintained copyright to everything. In each case, I'd already written and recorded the music and the producers asked for permission to use it in their productions. I granted them written permission and asked that they provide reference to my website in exchange along with my details in the opening credits.
It is between you and the producer to negotiate terms, fees (if applicable) and copyright usage agreements. In general, if you wrote the music beforehand and give permission to a producer to use it, you maintain copyright whether money exchanges occur or not. If you are approached specifically to write for a film and are being paid to do so, copyright terms and ownership can be variable and should always be agreed upon before commencing work.
One example of the latter is when I was paid to write and record an entire album for a festival. Even though I was paid to write and record this album specifically for the festival, I still maintained full copyright ownership. The festival also maintained perpetual non-exclusive usage rights too. I have since included one of the songs (the main themesong) from that album on another album and other films too.

ALWAYS make sure any agreements are completed in writing and signed by all parties beforehand. Make sure all parties have a copy of the signed agreements.

Default CONGRATS

I good luck, I wish you all the best.
I wish I get a music deal (film).
I won't stop until I get a deal.
I have some of my music on myspace but have not received a call or comment.
I guess I just have to make better music.

Now the only thing that changes for you is that you have to obtain a commercial license of Reaper

Urednik:

Somehow I doubt he will get paid in excess of $20,000 US for this...
Step in the right direction, though!
