Default MIDI editor: control for beam direction (DONE)

Currently the beam direction of individal notes is only determined by Reaper depending on which line you put the note (default voice). I would like to see to a way to manually override the direction of the beam to up or down.

You can adjust the beam direction by changing the voice, at least...

If I really needed to do serious engraving I wouldn't bother using Reaper

Don't get me wrong, it's nice of you to offer me a workaround, but I simply posted a few improvement that IMHO would polish a few rough edges.

The editor is BTW much better than I have imagined when I heard that Reaper is going to get one

To use voices in notation view is not a workaround - it is the raison d'etre for voices.

Yeah, it's not a workaround.

Also Reaper's notation isn't even intended for any SERIOUS engraving, really. That's missing the point of it completely.

Using voices for layout is a workaround.

The feature request is just to be able to reverse the ~beam~ stem direction for individual notes without assigning them a voice (which also may result in rests being added to the measure in order to complete the rhythm in that voice)?

Yes.

I have edited my original post in the hope to clarify things.

Use cases:

The beam direction of a single note (default voice) sticks out. eg all are pointing down, but only one isn't because it is too low. This may not look pleaseant depending on taste.

The beam direction of a single note (high voice) extends very much above the staff. If the low voice is low enough the beam of the high voice could point downwards without collision. Again this is a matter of aesthetics.

PS: I have noticed that Reaper's idea of what a voice is may be different to my own view. Besides from sheet music my idea stems from using engraving software. They have no special "default voice", nor a high or low voice. They simply number the voices starting from 1.

IMHO importing and exporting scores by MusicXML would be much easier if Reaper would stick to that convention, ie default voice is #1, the next one #2, etc.

See http://www.musicxml.com/tutorial/not...-part-music-2/
