Default Reaper crash after loading a project, long noise

I have a serious problem with Reaper. Every time I load my projects, Reaper crashes after few seconds (normally just few seconds later after playback). Sometimes there is an error message, sometimes not. There is also a long and disturbing noise, sometimes I have to disconnect my interface to stop it.

I think it could be a plugin error, because if I load projects without fx there is no problem at all. But how can I verify this? There is a way to locate the problematic plugin? Should I reinstall everything ?

I am on Windows 7.

I just realized something really strange...I loaded an older project and everything was fine. I mixed for a moment without any problems. SO I tried to load my newer project and... magically it didn't crash...but just at the beginning! After few minutes it crashed with the same loud noise error...

What it's strange is that now I can predict when Reaper will crash. First I start to hear some crackle from monitors while I'm playing some parts of my song. Then I start to play and stop these parts repeatedly and Reaper crashes atuomatically.
I imagine that maybe some instruments in these parts has some plugin conflict?

I tried several solutions, but I still have the same problem. When I load my new projects, i just hit play and everything crashes.(

Seems to me as you have already verified that it is a plugin error

To find the culprit, look into Windows' crash report. See the thread on how to report bugs, by Ollie here http://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=36653 (check the info on "Post error/crash messages").

If that does not tell you anything, you can always do it the hard the way. Start up Reaper with all FX off-lined and then enable them one by one until the project crashes. Since it seems that the FX does not crash immediately, you may have to repeat this several times, enabling them in different order and such. Can get very tedious indeed, so let's hope that the crash report holds the necessary info.

So, I tried this method too. I backupped my project. Then I started the project with all Fx offline. Then, I enable them one by one for just one part in the song. Then, I deleted all the other instruments and plugin. I started mix with the project, playing around, recording stuff, etc. Everything worked fine. So I saved my project, closed Reaper, then opened again the modified project and starting play again but...after few seconds I had the same crash and noise error.

I googled the EVENT_HIVE_LEAK and foudn this:
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/w...c-99d2ad9d641a

But this doesn't really answer anything in your case, I think.

Can it have something to do with the Native Instruments FXs trying to access some license server? Try running those FX in their own processes.

But this doesn't really answer anything in your case, I think.

Can it have something to do with the Native Instruments FXs trying to access some license server? Try running those FX in their own processes.
Thnk you very much, but I still can't find the origin of the crash.
I really can't figure out the way to solve this problem.
I tried also to enable fx one by one but is not predictable, sometimes crash happens sometimes not.
It's incredible, Reaper looks really stable to me, it's the first time I'm experiencing this kind of systematic crash. Hope that someone could help me because I'm really don't know what do actually.

I'm wondering...this might be a latency problem?

I have a zoom r24 with high buffering settings (2048)

No I don't think so, Reaper should be able to handle that.

Maybe something is broken in your ini-files. Try a portable install and see if that works better.

Default Same error

I had had the same situation.
There is a big project. Everything worked well. But yesterday there was the same error.
After loading of the project he works half of minute and then gives an error message.
It tried to be rolled away on a backup projects. To freeze paths. To make the full draft copy. Nothing helps.
In simpler project everything works well and there are no errors.

Hi I tried to uninstall and reinstall reaper but it didn't work. Do you think with a portable installer it would change?
I will give a try when I come back home later

Thank you for sharing, it seeems I am not the only one experiencing this. I don't even know if it's a plugin conflict issue. But it's sure it happens with biggest projects, especially these ones where I loaded a lot of plugins trying to experiment several mixing techniques which involves more CPU (sidechaining, serial compression, parallel compression, mix automation etc)

That error message would be interesting to see.

Probably not relevant, but what sort of ram and cpu use percentages are you showing in the project(s) where this is happening.?
Would also help to know what actual computer hardware you are using.

Also what virtual instruments are you using?

Not sure how active it is, but the Italian speaking part of this forum might offer some different takes on this, since they will be able to read and interpret italian error messages better than us anglophones!

1) Go ahead and install a portable version to some folder as-is and don't add any VSTs to the scan list or migrate any settings from the installed version - keep it a vanilla install - can you repro now? We need to know that answer for sure.

2) Sanity check... You aren't running reaper explicitly as admin are you?

3) The WER file shows an awful lot of installed plugins so see #1 just to be sure.

The registry hive error you are getting is sort of normal, meaning it would be better if it weren't there but it's more troublesome that it causes an actual crash. It's possible the OS thinks it is leaked and closes it but Reaper still has an open handle to it hence the crash. Since Reaper is opening all these Registry keys - which doesn't mean it has to be Reaper, it could be any plugin Reaper is hosting so see where I'm going with this?

It forces Reaper to run in the admin sandbox rather than the one for your user account - so you are in your sandbox and reaper in another, yet you need to interact with it. I brought it up because sometimes these errors occur (in a benign fashion) when there is more than one account involved.

Secondly, there are always anomalies with running Reaper as admin (such as can't drag drop files into Reaper etc.), and you should never have to run explicitly as admin unless some plugin isn't being a good citizen. It creates a security hole for one and secondly, the guidance to not have to do this (from a plugin dev perspective) has been around for 16 years now.

To be fair the are some scenarios that aren't completely the Dev's fault such as installing all the VSTs in a protected location such as a subdirectory in program files FYI. It's best to have plugins installed in a common location outside of protected folders, for example C:\VST64 and C:\VST32 but I'll admit all installers don't make this very easy which puts some onus back on the developers.

All of the above combined with some of your errors made me want to ask the question and if you could reproduce the problem when not running as admin.

Ok, I turned off the option of "Run Reaper as admnistrator", but unfortunately it didn't solve the problem...
So i'm trying to create a portable installation as you suggest, but when I launch Reaper it automatically load all my plugins. How can I keep a vanilla install?

A portable install can't load your plugins if you don't include the scan paths. Make sure you double-click reaper.exe inside the folder you installed the portable instead of say clicking on a project or the regular shortcut.

Thank you very much for your help, finally I decided to format and reinstall everything... It took long time and efforts, but now everything is more stable.
