Default tenacious timestamping

hi,

i lurk here occasionally, first-time poster. i was saved from cubase 4 by the SoundOnSound reaper review. i love the customizability (a few times i've spent the evening playing with reaper instead of actually making music).

here is my problem:
i was reading the musicxp.net tuning tips, and #22 says this:
__________________________________________________ _______________
With NTFS volumes, Windows XP updates the last access timestamp every time it accesses the hard drive. This can cause a significant decrease in performance. This can easily be disabled as shown below.

Start > Run > regedit > HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SYSTEM > CURRENTCONTROLSET > CONTROL > FILESYSTEM

Add a new DWORD value - "NtfsDisableLastAccessUpdate" (without quotes) and set the value to 1. Then reboot to make changes effective.
__________________________________________________ _______________

i did this, and my system seems to _ignore_ the registry entry. i still get updated timestamps.

1. is this tweak even worth it?
2. has anyone else had this problem?

i can't find mention of it anywhere on the web. google searches seem only to turn up postings of the tip itself.

i'm not even sure what system specs to post:
AMD Athlon 64 3500+ Newcastle 2.2GHz Socket 939 Processor
ASUS A8V DELUXE Socket 939 VIA K8T800 Pro ATX AMD Motherboard
CORSAIR XMS 1GB (2 x 512MB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200)
2x Raptor WD740GD 74GB 10,000 RPM Serial ATA150 Hard Drive
Caviar SE16 WD2500KS 250GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive
ATI X800XT
Focusrite Saffire
WindowsXP SP2
AutoPatcher XP

i thought maybe another tweak might've caused this, but i don't see how the OS is ignoring the registry.

if anyone has a clue, or can point me to another forum that help, any help would be greatly appreciated!!

thanks,

chris

this works on my machine. although you still see the last access in the properties tab of a file. but it only has the time of the creation of the file there. it doesn't get updated anymore when accessing or updating the file.
