Default Item setting: Preserve pitch when changing rate
Is there a global default for this option?
For each individual item it appears in Media Item Properties, and at least for non-midi tracks seems to default to unchecked (don't preserve pitch) which is not the way I use it 99% of the time.
I think I've looked through all the places a default could be made but just don't see it.
Am I blind? Any clues?

Wouldn't use it personally, but why not give users a choice?

Likewise.
I can't imagine why this would not be an option already. It seems like for non-midi work with stretching you'd almost never want the pitch to change.
Thanks guys.

I'm using the latest REAPER version (3.71).
Whether I import audio items or record them from scratch, the 'Preserve Pitch When Changing Rate' options is checked as standard (exactly what you guys want... and me). Am I missing something 'cos it works the way you want it to now?
In your project settings, set the timebase to "Beats (Position, Length, Rate". You can save this as the default project settings.
Now, when you change the BPM, both MIDI and Audio items change tempo while preserving pitch.
If you want to do the same thing with the playrate control, right-click on the rate control first and check the "Preserve Pitch" option (always right-click on everything in REAPER ;-)

They want it disabled.

Are you sure?
bblue says the Preserve Pitch option is unchecked for each item by default and that isn't what he wants (see initial post). My finding is that it is checked for each item by default.

Thanks Boon.
I do have "Beats (Position, Length, Rate)" set as the default, and always have as far as I know. A number of sessions that I've been working with (off and on) for the last 6+ months seem to all have the item checkbox for preserving pitch UNchecked on every item. But if I start a new session from scratch all items in the tracks created seem to have that option checked. Perhaps there's been some default change or a related bug fix between then and now, I'm just not sure how they got to be that way.
I did discover that the actions Item properties: Clear take preserve pitch, and Set take preserve pitch, on a selected track will set/clear the item preserve pitch option on all items in the track. I'm not sure why it's labeled as being for takes, though.

Because those settings are stored per take, not just per item.

And selecting a track auto selects all items. Ok, get that but... How or why would you want to apply different pitch/no-pitch shifting defaults to a take in a group of takes in an item?

I think I’m readind this entire thread for the fourth time...
Is it me (and my english comprehension) or there’s no really answer to the question:
Is there a default setting for: Preserve pitch??
It seems to be checked by default for some people and unchecked for others...
There should be a way to set default for this but I really can’t find it...
Any clue?

Just found out - you need to change action shortcut, like advised in this post: https://forum.cockos.com/showpost.ph...03&postcount=6
Show action list> (Increase &) Decrease item rate by ~0.6% (10 cents) > set the shortcuts if you want to use this behaviour or keep the default one which does CLEAR "PRESERVE PITCH".

I've still not found a general setting for this. ADD IT, PLEASE.
However, there's now an SWS action which can sort of get you there.
SWS: Clear all takes preserved pitch.
This is still not a global setting, so anytime you add a new item, it's still going to preserve the pitch.

Isn't this covered by:
'project settings' > 'timebase for items/envelopes/markers' > set this to "beats (position/length/rate)'
Timebase for tempo/time signature envelope > set this to 'Time'
and then click 'save as default project settings' ?
I guess user 'boon' said this in 2010. I just set this up yesterday, and it works for me - unless there is a trap waiting lol, like it resetting itself as noted above (?)...or is this not what you're after?

That didn't work for me, but I did find the solution just now.
Under Project Settings > Advanced | There's a checkbox for "Enable 'Preserve pitch when changing rate' for new items". Just uncheck that box and save that as your project default and all will be well.

180 degrees on the OP but same topic years later
2022, and this post still is relevant.
As a sound designer I rely a LOT on changing playbackrate where pitch is not compensated. In my situation Item properties always has, by default, Preserve Pitch When Changing Rate on, while I need this to be off 99% of my time.
My Project Settings(see attachment) are set to Beats position length,(eventhough "Time" would be more logical for me in most cases). I can not find this checkbox to Enable or Disable this setting by default.
Reaper V5.62
Any thoughts?

Only a tease of semi helpful hope from me, but I had this same issue and a few years ago managed to make it default to always not pitch compensating, but for the life of me I can't remember how I did it No doubt it was from begging on here somewhere. But don't give up. It's possible Calling all people with better retention of information....

Yaaas, this totally worked now that I finally upgraded. Thanks!
I'm running 6.75 now, which looks like darkmode was enabled for me.
Anyway this is gonna save many clicks.
