Default Snap time selection to item ends near cursor

It would be really neat if you could snap the end or start of time selection to item ends just by hovering the mouse near them.

Just like item ends snap to the time selection ends, which is already a feature.

Yes, please.

Devs, please can we have this option?

I would gladly pay extra for this.

Default Snap time selection to item edge

I agree, I need this feature too. This has been requested many times over the years, as you can see here:

https://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?p=2112976

Cubase has had this feature for years. It's pretty basic. Reaper should have it too.

Also, a more advanced but extremely useful feature would be an option to snap selections to zero crossings in audio waveforms. Cubase has that too, and it's a huge time saver.

To clarify, I think the snapping should happen when the cursor is close to the edge not only on the x-axis, but also on the y-axis.

+1 Would be handy.

Right now the turnaround will be to enable "Snap cursor to edges of media items on any track" in Snap/Grid settings, then left click on the edge of the item (to move and snap the cursor to it) and move time selection to the cursor.

Also will be great to add fade in/fade out snapping to the grid.

Item fade snapping exist already. It's kinda hidden in the mouse modifiers. In the mouse modifiers look for Media Item fades, left drag.
"media item fade" change that to "Just move", then hit the apply button in that window to take effect.

Regarding the time selection to snap to media items edge's, man, I wish It would happen. It's really frustrating that it doesn't work.

The cursor will snap to media item edges, and the time selection will snap to the cursor, so you could do it that way -- click on the end of the item you want to snap to, then edit the time selection.

This is what I currently do. It's just a bit of a pain while working with lots of items and you want to quicky do a mouse swipe to render from point a to point b.

Please schwa. Will you guys at least consider it?
See this post.

Anyway, many thanks.

True, but it must be easy to implement this the "right way"...

A workaround but maybe people find this even faster than having to drag Time selection End ( i know for sure i will, cause i hate mouse dragging):

Use this Custom Action (keybind it).
Item navigation: Move cursor right to edge of item
Time selection: Set end point

Workflow:
- Select an Item to which Time Selection End must be set.
- hit keybind.
- Presto !

If you would rather have the Cursor not been moved than i assume you can make this Custom Action:

SWS/BR: Save edit cursor position, slot 01
Item navigation: Move cursor right to edge of item
Time selection: Set end point
SWS/BR: Restore edit cursor position, slot 01

EDIT: Another Custom Action idea (keybind it).

Item: Select item under mouse cursor
Item navigation: Move cursor right to edge of item
Time selection: Set end point

Workflow:
Press keybind and keep it pressed.
Now, Move mouse over the Item to which Time Selection End must be set.

If you want you could keep the keybind continously pressed and then just hover mouse
over different Items.
You will see that Time End will continously adapt to the latest item you mouse hovered over !

Warm Regards !

Checked the last one and it works properly with this action "Item navigation: Move cursor right to edge of item" changed to this one - "Item navigation: Move cursor to end of items".

Thanks for the idea, a lot faster then dragging!

Please.
No work arounds.

It's a simple request, and a lot of users would use it.

It's just frustrating.

"Just like item ends snap to the time selection ends, which is already a feature"

Here's a demo of Sony Vegas of what this request is.

I respect your wish but with my proposed Custom Actions (certainly the last one) you can achieve what you want way faster than cumbersome mouse dragging as you do in your gif.
And in that regard, i won't even wanna call those Custom Actions workarounds but a workflow enhancement.

"Time is money" for me, always, and mouse dragging is time consuming, always.

No offense ofcourse and just my 2 cents WyattRice !

@vanhaze No problem.

I use the mouse. That's what the request is about. Not the keyboard.
Like I've said "It's a very basic editing feature alot of people would use"

It's been requested for over 11 years now, and is an elevated request that 245 users voted for.

This would be so much more useful if it were "Snap time selection to item ends Under Mouse". So you could choose, while dragging the time selection, which end to snap to, simply by hovering over the media item you're interested in snapping to. It would be dynamic, purely based on mouse position.

I find the above linked addition to be almost useless unfortunately.
