Default Using Zylia on Windows 10 with headphone monitoring?

Do anyone know how to set up the Zylia mic with Windows 10 on a tablet so that I can also monitor a binaural decoding using the intermal headphone plug? I know how to do this on Mac, but not on Windows.

I guess you're talking about using their software standalone and not via REAPER?

How do you find the quality of the Zylia? I've been curious about it since they first announced it. What's it's noise floor, spacial resolution and frequency response like?

No, I want to record in Reaper in order to later on encode to 3rd order ambisonics. The stand alone application seem to enforce identifying a limited number of sources to separate, as if there is a small acoustic band surrounding the mic. I rather want to do field recordings that I can work with later on in O3A.

As for quality the fact that it is 3rd order makes a big difference from first order. The trams Nets are not as good as with first order, but the increased spatial resolution makes it worth experimenting with , and I guess I am still 8n a process of getting to know the mic, it’s potentials and limitations.

Hi,

If latency is not a big problem for you, you can use ReaStream between to instances of Reaper, or with Reaper and another host, one using Zylia's driver for recording and the other one your PC driver for monitoring.

By the way, I don't find it really necessary to do realtime monitoring (in binaural I suppose) since we have no way to adjust the ZM1 input and the recording...

About the ZM1 quality, I am mixed since I always find the RAW recordings very good, but as soon as I try to encode and decode it, there is always a loss of sound accuracy, mostly in transcients and high frequencies, and a higher background noise.

Of course it depends a lot of the sounds, and ambiences can be rather good.
The worst for me is with Zylia's ambisonics converter, and the best with Sparta Array2SH, but I am still waiting for something that will be able to preserve the original sound of the microphone...

Trond, I am curious to know how you deal with this since you are a specialist in this domain ?

Thanks for the feedback. I’ll test this out regarding monitoring. I agree that there is nothing to be done to the recordings with the Zylia, but I still like to be able to monitor in order to get an impression of how (and if) it works, check for errors, and get an impression of how the recording translates while being able to listen to the site if the recording in situ.

One thing I have found is that the Zylia seems very sensitive to humidity. I have on a few occasions experienced that one or two of the mica are glitching when humidity is high. This gets resolved when the mic is in a dryer conditions again.

I have not used the Zylia enough yet to fully have an impression of how it works and the quality of the recordings. My impression is also that it will have less transients than e.g. a DPA4060 mic. I have found with the SoundField SPS200 as well that the encoded signal loose some openness and transients as compared to the raw mic signals. I suspect that this is the downside of the kind of averaging between many capsules that ambisonics encoding does.

One thing that I find makes a huge difference is to use Sonarworks to compensate for headphone or speakers in order to get as flat a frequency response as possible during playback.

I wholeheartedly agree regarding Sonarworks. It is a must have for me. I use four instances of it (eight channels) in my studio on my Ambisonic cube array and two more instances for headphones (one for my Beyer DT1990 Pros and one for my old workhorse AKG K240m cans).

It also seems worthwhile to compare plugins for encoding to 3rd order ambisonics.

Currently, I am comparing the Zylia Ambisonics Plugin and the Sparta Array2SH Plugin for encoding to ambisonics. For this test, I listen to some recent recordings, encoded to 3rd order ambisonics (O3A SN3D) and then decoded to binaural using the IEM Binaural decoder.

My initial impression is that the Sparta plugin sounds more clean, spatially articulated and open. Have anyone else made similar comparisons? Thoughts?

Default Monitoring Zylia when recording

@Trond, @JM, @Dave : did you try this ?

I can't get it to work. Maybe it helps one of you.
