Default [FIXED] VST folders are limited to 4096 ?!?

I just hit the ugly VST folder limit.
Reaper v5.35 x64 for windows can handle maximum of 4096 VST folders!?!
When you have more than 4096 VST folders it will just truncate the memory and you will see that it doesn't show the last x-over-4096 entries.

Now, the VSTfx/VSTis themselves are there and one can go to 'All Plugins' and filter by plugin name and it will show up.

Of course I don't have 4096+ VST .dlls.
I just have a well organized VST folder structure so I can quickly find what I'm looking for.
For example, on my computer, it's not just simply:
Code:
'/VST/OldSkoolVerb.vst3'
, instead it is in:
Code:
'/VST/VSTfx/Reverb/Reverb Stereo/Voxengo - OldSkoolVerb/OldSkoolVerb.vst3'
Same goes for all other VSTs I have.
Exactly 1889 of them.

Now, I know, I know. I should really remove the ones that I tend to never use, but somehow, I feel that this would limit my creativity. Choosing a new EQ or Reverb or Synth I never used before, out of the blue often gives me unexpected and wonderful results. So, yes, I would like to keep my VST garden and would like to keep expanding it.
Unless Cockos tells me it is some kind of OS limitation and it is not fixable by them.

I'm desperate.
@Cockos: help!

You should only have your VSTs sorted by vendor (so, a very simple single-level folder tree structure), and do your own custom folders using Reaper's User Folders feature.

Don't think this is an OS limitation, though. But there are better ways to do what you want without all those pysical subfolders on your hard drive.

Thanks for the advice.
I don't think I will be following it though.
My HDD folder organization is DAW-agnostic, which means it shows up exactly as I want it in each and every VST host I use / might use.

If it is a simple matter of using a 16 bit hash, as opposed to 12 bit hash somewhere in Reaper's source code, then I would expect Cockos to fix it.

Not much else to suggest, then. Except perhaps, try to find ways to reduce the number of subfolders you have.

Also, there are hosts which don't really care about your subfolder structure, just so you know.

I think it's more of the case of disallowing a certain number of recursions while reading out the folders, or something.

My best advice, get rid of 95% of these VSTs, surely you don't need them all, and surely they aren't all high quality.

Almost 2k plugins????
How many of them do you even know what they do without cheatring and peeking?

Time to thin the herd! Even I (plugin addict) dont have a fraction of that many!

I did explain, didn't I: each and every plugin is carefully categorized, where my categories for, for example EQs go three levels deep:
Code:
EQ
- EQ Analog
- EQ Linar Phase
- EQ M-S
  - Variety of Sound - BaxterEQ
    - BaxterEQ.dll
...

VSTi
- Keys
  - Piano
    - Bigcat Instruments - Skerratt London Piano
      - Skerratt London Piano - 64.dll
...
I will, definitely prune the garden and remove the ones that I can live without.
Still, I don't think Reaper should impose such a limit on it's users.

It helps me find exactly what I am looking for in no time at all.
At the same time it gives me plenty to choose from for each category.

For example:
I want to add reverb to a track. But, I know my track is stereo and has some width to it so I don't want to use a mono reverb that would smash my stereo image, so I am going straight to Reverb/Reverb Stereo/ folder. Now, I don't want to be using one and the same plugin/sound/character all the time, so when I arrive in that folder, I have ~20 different folders to choose from and they are all stereo reverberators. Hence, I, more or less, end up using a new plugin every single time. I am practically surfing through my VSTs as I am producing my music and I enjoy it tremendously.

Keeping everything in one folder, or even in just basic categories always results in a frustration for me, as if I had all of the reverbs under /Reverb/ subfolder, I would accidentally load a mono reverb where I wanted a stereo reverb (or spring reverb, or ...).

On the other hand, working with just a proven set of plugins would feel limited for me as I would always land on one and the same sounding plugins.

As far as updates go: I have nothing to update in the VST land.
Reaper is the only thing I do update.
I am using Windows 7 x64 SP1 with auto-updates disabled. And I love it.

You can just rename that plug to everything you like.

So.... (grin) you have your socks neatly paired and stored in alphabetically-sorted order according to primary colour, with sub-drawers for patterned/non-patterned, sub-sub drawers in each category for short or long, these in turn sub-divided into alphabetically-sorted order according to material.
At what point do you sub-divide them off according to age, or wear, or elasticated/non-elasticated?
I assume you have some sort of T-card system or at the very least a basic sort matrix.

Worlds biggest sock drawer....

Please note: for any folks with an excessively literal turn of mind, this IS intended to be a joke in the form of reductio ad absurdum.

*sigh*
