Default "Apply track/take FX to item as new take" grayed out!

I want to convert a MIDI item to audio. When I right-click, all options to choose "Apply track/take FX to item as new take" are grayed out.

How do I make them active so I can click one?

EDIT: Okay, so I was able to do it from the 'Item' menu. After that, the right-click menu was no longer grayed out. Weird...

EDIT #2: Now they're grayed out again in both the Item menu and right-click.

I don't understand what's happening.

Why?? It's simple. Click the Item menu, and there are options that I want to use - but they're grayed out.

Right-click a track (item), and the same options are in that menu, but they are grayed out.

Don't need an animated capture for that.

Mine are only greyed out when there's no VSTi loaded or if the item is not selected.

What FX / plugins do you have on the track or item?

No VSTi or plugins. External keyboard with a MIDI connection. I can record and playback fine, but other than playing it back in real time onto a new track, I can't get it converted to audio.

Ok, so you are not converting MIDI, but recording audio from an external device. Apply track / take FX is only going to work with internal / virtual instuments.

That's the only way you can get the audio onto the computer. Midi doesn't transfer digital audio.

Not actually recording audio, I'm recording MIDI data and want to convert it to audio. But as Stews says above, real-time playback is the only way for that - which makes sense - just hoping there was another way... but we're not in Star Trek's era yet. haha

You might find that a virtual instrument might be better than the sounds from your keyboard, unless, of course, you have a decent keyboard with great sounds!

That I do. But I'll probably look at some VSTi's to make things easier. It's just such a time consumer to try all available products to find sounds I like.

Good … I agree it does take time to review VSTi's and then check presets and/or program them yourself.
