Default Options for reducing latency while tracking: low-bitrate during recording possible?

Trying to figure out ways to reduce latency when recording vst synths. (having already implemented a lot of the usual techniques)

This is an idea from working in video, where the quality of the visuals can be deliberately reduced in order to reduce frame rendering/RAM preview times: Is there any way to record in Reaper with a really low quality bitrate setting, which switches back to regular quality on playback?

So, just had a thought: is it possible to record in Reaper with a really low quality bitrate setting, which switches back to regular quality on playback?
i don't think this will help you reduce latency, though raising the sample rate will.
Maybe not what you want to hear but probably the best solution is to get a decent interface with well-written drivers, like an RME or whatever.

Find a similar synth that's really light on CPU and use that for monitoring with while you record the MIDI?
