U-he and pro Linux audio ports
The Linux-native U-he plugins are what I'm mainly interested in using with Linux REAPER, yes sonnie!
There is little effort involved in porting those plugins that use JUCE for the UI and I know there are a number of commercial JUCE-based plugins that could be easily ported to Linux. In most cases I expect its not because the devs don't want to support Linux but just they didn't think there are enough users.
What with Bitwig, REAPER, Tracktion, Mixbus, Ardour, MusE, Renoise and qtractor we've got a nice selection of powerful, Linux native DAWs for most every type of user now. Now we just need more plugin devs of U-he's calibre to bring the plugins and then we may see more switchers.
NI supporting Linux would be a gamechanger.

It's all in the money. They (and other developers) are on it for the money. As plain as that. They run business to make a living. If the potential Linux users base is big enough to justify the effort, we'll see native Linux plugins from the main devs. But I guess it won't happen. As a 100% Linux user I wish to see it some day. But being realistic, We are a small gang doing audio in Linux.
Haven't peeked into the site for a long while.

Gotta build and test the current release candidate on Debian Jessie with the KXS repos enabled and the AVL RT kernel given the repo is freshly made public by GMaq. Will report back.

I had a chat at Superbooth with Bitwig devs: Linux is about 7% of all Bitwig Studio downloads. Not as bad as I thought. U-HE has no absolute count, but they are happy with the "testing" KVR downloads and user responses.

Yeah, it is a slow process but in my mind there is no doubt Linux will win, because Linux is a huge community of people, and everything else is just business. Businesses go bust. Linux will live on.
I've gone back to hardware samplers and synths lately and now nothing can stop me from using just about anything for mixing. All I need is a 32 or more track HD recorder with the ability to run some FX for mixing. I'm considering using Ardour, possibly Harrison Mixbus for that. At least I'm going to finally get my proper true mono tracks back.

This RC is still a long way to be usable. It's nice to see it running but not ready for a production environment. As for now Reaper 5 works much better under Wine. In fact way better that Reaper ever 4 did. I'm perfectly fine as is. Will keep an eye on this anyway.

I have some more improvements coming to the linux builds, we'll release them shortly after 5.20.
Also of interest: a build for ARMv6t2+, e.g. Raspberry Pi 2 and 3.

Raspberry Pi 2 and 3 or Linux sounds great. Can't wait.
Thanks, Justin.
I'll start thinking which interface I can get up and running with one of those OS'es.

This was utterly unexpected! Incredibly great news indeed! I always thought you were a visionary, Justin.
And I've been thinking about buying a little Pi to tinker with... I've got a pretty solid reason to do it now. This opens up many interesting possibilities...
Thank you sooooo much!

Pardon my idiocy but does that also include pi zero? I know it's a little less capable but a runner is a runner huh?
Intriguing!

Hmm the Pi-Zero will almost work, just no JSFX or EEL reascript. We could make a build for it with those features but they would be incredibly slow. Also it will be very very slow on the 0 anyway...

Thanks for reply - so reaplugs OK? Barring slowness..
Would love to try it to see if with e.g a USB interface what it could manage, got the zero for Christmas and just to witness reaper on something sk tiny and cheap would be kind of cool, and like carbon nanotubes we can think of a use for it later...
Idea:
Sell a special reaper edu pi edition licence pre installed on microSD card, and or bundled with a Pi itself.
Cheapest studio ever ™

Even with "just" JSFX, we're talking about a 50$ box multi-FX programmable pedalboard guitar heaven possibility right ?
The cross 2.0 ? This is 1.0 :

I am a strong believer of Linux taking over the desktop - pretty soon. It just needs one large commercial company to step up for it. Look what happened to smartphones. The DAW that will be better prepared for that moment will be the one to absorb new customers inflow. Hopefully this will be Reaper.

wow, the possibilities for audio detection / recording using REAPER on a pi is great
use a usb DAC and you get decent mic input. makes for a good field recorder, nanny cam, etc.
this also makes me think that Pis might make good ethernet-midi nodes.

In fact, it has already overtaken the OS-world. Routers, modems, industrial systems, servers, cloud services, smartphones, you name it. Just not the desktop - yet.

Indeed. But desktop is what's really interesting for DAW users. Nevermind the others.

REALLY looking forward to native Linux Reaper!!!!!
Win10 was horrible, and the direction it's going even more horrible. Ubuntu 16.04 LTS out today, just downloaded it and going to spent some time with it in a virtual machine. Hoping it will be my only OS in the not too distant future

And let's all just keep in mind that Justin announced "some more improvements", not the first stable release. (Though i wouldn't put anything past them. :-) )

That's right. But then things are moving in that direction, too. Who would imagine a mainstream computers manufacturer providing official Linux drivers for their machines? Now Dell is routinely doing this. BTW drivers is one area where Linux had been struggling for many years. These days, in a vast majority of cases, it just works. You install it and half an hour later you have a fully-functioning machine. It is as easy as installing OS X, only that Linux supports almost every existing piece of hardware, macs included. It works great, it is way less complicated and therefore more reliable than Windows, it is orders of magnitude more customizable and powerful than OS X, it boots faster than either of these, and finally - it's free. What's needed to really change the market is games. But then there is Steam. So I think we can be optimistic.

i just want to be able to move my systems to linux. sick of both osx and windows. currently running a hack-pro and just upgraded the sys ssd via cloning and cloning those two oses was a nightmare. linux would have been so much friendlier to such a process.

I use cloning a lot. I'm afraid Linux used to be solid. But the latest Debian has had some surprises. To be honest, these always seem to surface with hybrid disks or SSD's, when cloning to different brand/model disks. Normal spinning disks never seem to have those problems.
The same goes for OSX. Never a problem with spinning disks, sometimes SSD clones simply won't boot. Just like some RAID setups from years ago...
