Default Palm Pre / Web version?

Hey Basu,

Have you given any thought to doing an HTML5/Javascript/ajax version of wifight? If not for the Palm Pre natively, at least a web version that's iPhone/Pre/Webkit compatible? Lots of homebrew apps for the Pre popping up on Precentral.net's forums now that a version of the SDK for the Pre was leaked.

I'm going to be getting a Palm Pre in a couple of weeks. Would be cool to be able to play it on there natively.

Doing a web version seems like a nightmare. You ought to try running Wifight in the Palm emulator on the Pre and see if it works!

Don't see how a web version would 'be a nightmare' exactly. It could be made compatible with the iPhone AND the Pre. 2 birds with one stone. 2 new audiences to expand wifight to!

Also, wifight is known to work in Classic already, but I seriously doubt I'll be paying $30 to play a free game.

If I were going to spend $30 on wifight, I'd rather send basu the money to put towards developing a native Pre version.

I also play at another turn-based site, littlegolem, which is mostly for main PC browser use, but you can also access it via Blazer. But I find it such a pain to do so, each move requires at least three laborious screen refreshes, just not worth it in the end. I dont know if SSrjazz's plan would get around this sort of hassle?

Even more recently I have also started playing Texas Holdem on the standalone Palm app, Real Dice World. RDW offers a multitude of games, and is an extraordinary user experience, partly because it runs on many platforms, and has a huge user base that always ensures a good game 24hrs a day. Definitely worth a look, you can get a week's free access. Dangerously addictive though - I think thats why I prefer the mellower pace of turn-based games. A constant feed of adrenaline is not a good thing!

Anyway since Real Dice is not turn-based, Basu's plans for a multi-platform standalone game server still represent an as-yet unavailable solution.

Actually, the browser in the Pre is HTML5/javascript capable, based on webkit just like the browser in the iPhone.

Blazer is so 1990's. It's a WAP browser, wasn't a full html browser. Basu could code it using safari for windows (or on a mac) and as long as it worked there, it'd work on both the Pre and the iPhone. It'd be like most javascript/ajax based games on the web today - not complete screen refreshes like on Blazer. He could make a version of wifight using HTML5/Javascript that behaves just as the windows and palm native clients do.

Well, they just released their MojoSDK today. I'll check it out. In the meantime, L1quid and I are working on getting game spectating on the web site working again at least.

http://www.precentral.net/coming-fal...velopment-easy

There's another option. This company has released a software development environment for making webapps for the iPhone and apps for the Palm Pre.....

They're supposed to be adding support for more mobile platforms in the future.

* iPhone emulator and development environment - no need for the iPhone SDK
* iPhone application development for Windows
* Palm Pre emulator and development environment
* Mobile Web development environment
* Other popular smartphone emulators (coming soon)
* Blackberry Storm simulator (coming soon)
* Google G1 emulator (coming soon)

Looks like it's free to download...or at least try.

There is also an interesting comment to that precentral story:

"There is another option proposed by Palm in its developer forums over at developer.palm.com: leasing time on an actual device on the web through a company called DeviceAnywhere. I signed up yesterday and a representative sent me documentation with the 15 minutes after my registration."

I think you have to contact DA to find out prices, but they do offer a free trial too
