Default Basic connections...

I don't use Reaper all that often and so I find myself in this predicament
from time to time.

Was using V. 2, then V.3 and now I just upgraded to V. 5.

I plugged in a Boss GT-1 went into Prefs and set things up.
I was able to record and playback no problem.

Now I unplugged my GT-1 and plugged in my Edirol UA-25EX audio device and am having
all kinds of problems.

I don't know what settings to use for the Pref/Audio.
Audio system?
WDM, Direct Sound, Waveout, ASIO, Dummy Audio, WASAP ?

Input Device?
MS sound mapper, IN UA25EX, Cab le B, mic, cable A?
Output Device?
MS sound mapper, speakers, cable B, Out UA25EX, cable A?

I have attempted to make some recordings.
It will record for a few seconds then stop!
It will play back for a few seconds and stop!
This has never happened before with Reaper.

I am almost tempted to go back to a previous version (2 or 3).

Suggestions?

Still looking for advice if possible...

I just did an experiment.
This time I fired up my ol' trusty desktop PC with WinXP and
Reaper V. 2.5 or 2.7.

Checked the audio settings.
At first it was:
Audio: Waveout
Input: Realtek AC97
Output: Logitek USB speaker
24 bit
I got a full sound and the song played back perfectly without stopping.

Then I changed the audio settings to the following:
Audio: ASIO Driver UA-25EX
Input: 1/2
Output: 1/2

I plugged in my guitar to the UA-25EX and recorded with the bass/drum tracks.
Perfect!
Played back perfectly.

So why did I just upgrade to Reaper ver 5.0?
I am trying out a Boss foot pedal (GT-1) and its drivers requires Win7 or higher.
My notebook has Win 8.1, so I can use the GT-1 with it.
As I mentioned I could record into Reaper v 5.0 with the GT-1 (it's also an audio interface).

But now I would like to do some recording with the Edirol UA-25EX.

Any suggestions what to do to get the notebook to work?
When I use the same settings that I have on my desktop on my notebook,
it doesn't work. Symptoms as described above.

So on the non working computer you are selecting the same ASIO driver?
I guess the o/s is not the same so have you made sure to download the correct driver for the new o/s?
What buffer and sample rate is the interface set to and does thios match your project?
What o/s is it?
Have you set windows power management to high performance?
Is the interface connected to USB3 or USB2 port?
When you say it stops playback, is the transport on Reaper actually stopping or just the audio is dropping out....no error message at all??

I doubt this issue is anything to do with Reaper version, but if you have an old version installer why not make a portable install and test it to be sure.

Yes.

Yes I am using the latest drivers for the Edirol.
Desktop o/s is WinXP.
Notebook o/s is Win 8.1

I don't know where/how to check my Edirol buffer/sample rate?

The system giving me problems is my notebook Win 8.1

The notebook has only ONE power setting.

USB1, only one port on this computer.
Actually this port is connected to a powered USB hub with 10 available USB ports.

The transport actually stops, but the play arrow stays stuck to ON.
No error messages.

I just installed the same version Reaper (2.51) onto my notebook that I have on my desktop and it's giving me the same problem as Reaper 5.x.

So it has something to do with my notebook.

When I go into the UA-25EX settings inside Reaper and try to change buffer etc. I get a message saying
"Device currently used by another application. Quit all applications..."
But I don't see any other app open. I was trying to increase the buffer from 6 to 7.

More specifically, this has something to do with my notebook + my Edirol audio interface.
Because the same computer works with Reaper + another interface (Boss GT-1).

Steinberg UR22 had an issue with some wifi devices, similar symptom that I noticed on my laptop (it also happened with my desktop when I had a wifi adapter card at one time). Try disabling the wifi adapter in device manager temporarily.

This is a bit of a stab in the dark, but it reminded me of that UR22 issue.

Anyway if disabling the wifi adapter works, you can use a USB wifi adapter, one which won't interfere with the device. I have the name of one around here somewhere...or rather my friend who has that laptop (and the USB wifi adapter that I used with it) will be able to tell me which USB wifi adapter worked without problems with the UR22. So that would be a possible solution.

A note:
USB1 can only do 12 Mb/Sec.
At 24 bits/sample, this is how many audio channels it can handle (the total of both input and playback mono channels):

Sample Rate -- Channels
44.1K -- 11
48K -- 10
88.2K or 96K -- 5

These are ideal numbers, with only the interface using the USB; in practice it will be less. Especially if you have other USB stuff plugged into the hub.

You didn't mention how many channels your interfaces have, but you might want to keep the sampling rate at 44.1K just so you don't load down your USB bus too much.

It may be that the driver will refuse to work with a USB1 port if it was designed for the faster USB2 or USB3.

Good point. The GT-1 is limited to 44.1KHz so maybe if the Edirol is working at 96KHz it has something to do with it.

Also: what notebook PC is this? Specific brand/model, so I can look up what specs it has.

My notebook has a USB3 port.

It has only two channels and I use only one channel at a time.
Sample rate I never touch, at 44.1K.

Any other ideas?

I think the main thing to keep in mind is that the same computer, same Reaper, works without a hitch with a DIFFERENT audio interface.

AND, a different computer with same Reaper and the 'problem' interface works without a hitch.

I am sure the Edirol is set for 44.1K.
I don't touch anything in the settings and it works at 44.1K on the desktop
with an ancient WinXp o/s.

The notebook is an ASUS T100TA (circa 2013).

Try the USB 2 port. It might not play nice with USB 3 ports, and the USB 3 port won't provide any advantage for it anyway.

Your Edirol device is actually USB 1.1 based on information about how it functions (no full duplex at 96KHz for instance) and a lack of specificity as to whether it's actually USB 2 or not (not even mentioned in the manual).

It may even be necessary to "dumb down" the USB 2 port to a legacy driver...although I've never had to do that.

Thanks very much James.
It appears to have done the trick!

At first I didn't even think I had a USB 2 port. I always use the one full size USB 3 port on the left side of the tablet/notebook.
It was only by checking out the specs of the machine on another site that I remembered I had a micro USB port (and it's USB 2.0).

Here's a funny thing, the ASUS manual says this port is for charging or to supply power to the notebook!

Anyway I just played back the tracks and was able to record another track
without any stoppages at all. So I think this has solved the problem.
And I'm doing it in Reaper 2.51.

I'll keep you posted later on with how things are going.

Excellent! Hopefully that was the cause.

I've had some issues with some USB 3 ports not being "as backward compatible as they should be" with older devices. On some mainboards I've noticed some of the USB ports are made by different companies with different drivers, so that might be part of it. If I recall correctly maybe some mainboards even had some of the USB 3 by one manufacturer and some of the USB 3 by another manufacturer (front versus back ports, for instance).
