Default Recording midi track not item based

Is there a way, when recording both midi and audio, to have the audio record as usual (among the various recording modes) but have the midi tracks not be item based but simply track based? I’m currently getting around it by periodically gluing a midi track’s items together, but it’s not ideal.

Thanks : )

Create an empty track-length MIDI item first them Overdub the MIDI into it?

Tod & I among many others have been doing it this way for ages.

In fairness, I have recently started moving over to a sort of hybrid version of this.
I create sections within the main "one item track" and then cut n paste them where I need them.

Works for me & it still sounds less automated than looping sections/items.
