Default Loop record for a fixed number of takes?

Hi,
Does anyone know if there is a setting or a custom action that would loop-record a predetermined number of times, and then automatically stop?

For example, I make a four measure loop, go into record mode, and then focus on singing the four measure phrase 7x, to get 7 takes of the four measure phrase. Then record mode automatically stops.

I tried making a custom action to do this but my brain froze up.
Any ideas out there?
Thanks!!!

The simplest answer is to not loop at all. Copy that four measures out seven times on the timeline and just record straight through. Unless you want to hear the other takes while you're singing, but that is "abnormal" use of the take system and requires custom settings anyway.

But then you probably want to be able to treat them as takes - like see them on top of each other and be able to pick/cut between them within that four bar section. I had found a solution to that, but I don't remember what it was. ???

I did this where i have a song that's pretty much just V C V C... and the solo section is just another V C, so I played lead through the whole song. Now I want to "takeify" them over the solo section and comp them together. Sure wish I remembered where I saw how to do it...

Edit - ok, I guess it's not that simple.

Thanks, Ashcat.
I thought of this, but there are huge amount of vocals to sing, so the cumulative editing would take more time and effort then just loop recording for awhile, section by section.

I know there are features in Reaper which speed up work flow and increase organization, so that's what I'm looking for, but it's not essential.

Thanks for replying, I appreciate it!

Um- try__ "new recording that overlaps existing media items" >>set to "creates new media items in seperate lanes" (layers).
Loop rec function which splitts to seperates=nice n easy.

Thanks Bri1,

Region Playlists is very cool, I didn't know about it before, but I couldn't get it to go into Record mode.

Ya npz-- yep thing will not sync to transport--so there is the options "toggle monitoring/edition mode>edit project>>append playlist to project"
Double sorted! =)

Could you walk me thru this?

I found "toggle monitoring/edition mode" in the Actions list but I'm not sure how to proceed...

Thanks...

Ey- well yes i could, but where's the fun in that for you!!??
The point of these tools is to learn them- i cannot do that for you-- so just spend time with it--all these types of tools can be fun to play with-- so let your imagination run wild for a while and have some fun while you 'play 'n' learn'.
Ok? i just confuse people--=don't want to confuse you in any way by making a half assed video at speeds i edit @ normally-- i edit quick lolz....
Study the available options--then make each option a learning experience by performing the actions--- it's also a way to bug test stuff by doing stuff..

Okay, thanks.

I have to get back to singing. I was looking for a more efficient way of tracking vocals by myself, but I'll just go back to regular loop record.

SWS Cycle actions has a LOOP feature, I believe, though I've never used it. Maybe some investigation there will yield something positive....

Bruv-- easiest way imo-- is to loop your 'monitoring sections' over the amount of takes you want to record... so you want 4 bars repeated 7 times over--- then just make 1 recording pass and chop it up afterwards (comping audio)?
This is far easier-- i can do a walkthrough in video form---but that may just confuse you more---i dunno how you learn....what's more suitable..?

@JimmyGreenwood

Playing with the idea of using a looped Cycle Action to record N takes, I created this custom action, which, for an armed track with a time selection set, will record for the length of the time selection and stop (thanks to the inserted action marker at the end of the time selection).

Custom: CD record time selection
Go to end of time selection
Script: Insert_Stop_marker_at_edit_cursor.lua
Go to start of time selection
Transport: Record

That works fine in itself...

but when I try to loop it 8 times in the following Cycle Action...

it doesn't work... presumably because all 8 iterations of the loop fire in rapid succession without waiting for the previous one to finish...

So, is there a command I can put into a cycle action that will wait for the previous loop actions to finish before running the next iteration?

OR...

Is it possible to write a script that would trigger my custom action N times, waiting for completion each time?

Hey Bri1,
If you don't mind making a video, do it. Other people on the forum may find it helpful as well. I doubt I will be more confused, as long as all the steps are included.

Hey Uncleswede,
I know nothing about writing scripts, so you are talking way over my head! But it looks like you almost did it...

But if you get it, post it. I want to see that.
Thanks!

Heyyio- ok npz-- got a couple to do..so it will show something at least visually-- if you can follow mouse movements..your gonna be doing well-- there may be keystrokes or clicking combo's that can't be seen so **that initself** may confuse is what i meant.
It's quite straightforward like all good things-- it really depends just how far you like to go with complifications or simplications!!

Hope I'm not muddying the waters but the way I would do it is to have the Record button in 'Loop punch' mode, time-select where I wanted to record, and just do as many takes as I needed (Loop on, Enter to pause between takes). Then explode the takes to individual tracks.

Hi Bolgwrad,
Not muddying the waters at all.

That is exactly how I have been recording, except I just keep all the takes in lanes.

The only reason I thought this would be nice is there is a massive amount of four measure vocal phrases to sing, and to keep things moving I though it would be nice to have an automatic cutoff at say, seven takes. Then move on to the next four measure phrase in the song.

As it is, sometime I'm going to fifteen or twenty seven or more takes, trying to get it right.

This whole idea is to keep me from getting bogged down from my own perfectionism, combined with my lack of singing chops.

Of course, I could just count, but I'm focusing on singing, not counting.

Since there are a lot of features and tricks in Reaper that improve workflow, I thought this might be one of them. So it's not really a problem, it would just be a nice clean workflow improvement.

Thanks for the comment!

Hey Bri1,
Complificated is fine. I can definitely follow mouse clicks if I can see them. If there are any keystrokes or combification clicks that are off-camera just add a written comment when you post it.

Like, "after I clicked on X, off-camera I did Y." Or something like that.

Thanks.

Heh-ok.. ***i really do not mean to offend anybody here*** >> thing is,basically i see the take system as a 'musical crutch' -- much like vocal autotunings-ara etc etc--- the point of a performance is to nail it in 1 imo. 1 take finished.
I would be practicing hard if i can't 'get something down' until i do get it down-- on stage, you get 1 chance only-1 take---so make it the best take you ever made!!
When your "ready" -then hit record..walk away happy. =)
Vid will be up later today ok...nothing fancy.cheerz.

Yes. Different workflows for different people, and for different situations.

^Yes,absolutely! ok--so was not too sure what to show because i think the sws feature speaks for itself
No special keys were used other than |shift+r| to insert regions.. there is small notes in vid--but as you will see 2 actual 'bugs' were recorded also (apologies for that!)
The playlist feature itself seems to work just fine from experiences so far>>>> reaper v.5.70 was used here.
Knock yourself out with this tool, because >>> it's fun when you play,to discover!!
Once you get to know what actions work for 'you'-- 1 can set up to rec, stop,as you wish. =)
Tbch- every time i use soft or hardwares i do it differently each time-- no fixed method here..just free-for-all-randommost of the time sessions.

Hey Bri1,
Thanks for making the video.

I learned some new things, but it's not what I was looking for.

I'm just going to go low-tech and loop record for a random number of takes, then move on to the next section.

Thanks again for taking the time to make the video!

Your welcomed^ - even if you learned just 1 tiny thing-that was well worth it for me--- that silly vid does not show very much what can be done with this tool creatively.. it's great for dj style beat juggling and glitch effects aside from just normal type looping.
I guess there's no harm storing a billion takes on pc-- but i would rather have 1 golden take over all the others if possible..!!
cheerz.
