Default So long away from mixing, forgot the plugs! Help

Aside from the ReaStuff, I seriously forgot what plugins I normally use for the basics

Usually I try and use free or cheap stuff as that makes tutorials and other educational stuff we make easier for anyone to follow.

What are some good, 64 bit, not too munchy free(or very cheap) plugs in the vein of LA2a, 1176, VariMu, 670, SSL Channel Strip, API channel Strip, Neve Channel strip, and maybe a technical compressor, much like ReaComp?

Anything in this area on reverbs, delay, chorus and flange? Looking for bread and butter mixing and tracking plugins

Hi Pipe, this is just from the top of my head.

When not using JS/Reaperplug, this is what i most often use:
Orilriver Reverb:
https://www.kvraudio.com/product/ori...-denis-tihanov
Bluecats flanger:
https://www.bluecataudio.com/Products/Product_Flanger/

As for free channel strips -this is probably the only one:
http://deadducksoftware.blogspot.com...g-channel.html

A suggestion could be to also, check out the monthly reaper mix contest to see just how useful the JS/reaplugs are - and to re-learn them.

Here's a few freebies I like to use:

DC1A compressor, Klanghelm. Nice colorful comp ala CA2A. https://klanghelm.com/contents/products/DC1A/DC1A.php

TDR Nova (dyn eq), Kolentikov (comp), Slick EQ. Decent sounding free plugs also with some color if you push them. https://www.tokyodawn.net/tokyo-dawn-labs/

All of this is freeware and/or donationware:

1176: there's the JS plugin "1175 Compressor" and for a different take the "NP1136" which I find more versatile in that vein.

For a nice buss compressor that also does M/S: Sonic Anomaly "HBC2" (JS plugin or VST) here.

For some "character" compressors: MrElwood "Mothercomp" and "Sonnycomp" JS plugins here.

Character plugins: Airwindows IronOxide5, IronOxide Classic, Channel6, ToTape5, BussColors4 (and for compressors check out Pyewacket and VariMu). There are more plugins I could recommend but that'll keep you busy for now. (Righteous4 for example is great, but you need to learn to use it...and it's no normal plugin.)

EQ that works like Neve: JS plugin "RBJ 1073" (no "character", but it has the same curves/bands).

Delay/chorus/flange: I have no problem using the JS plugins. Oh and check out Geraint Luff's plugins. He has some you might like (including a spectrum match EQ!)

Reverb: ReaVerb with impulses from HybridReverb2:

http://www2.ika.ruhr-uni-bochum.de/HybridReverb2/

Search the page for the download link titled Download: HybridReverb2_large_database.zip

I join a couple together to use as a stereo file, then load them into ReaVerb. They're my favorite impulses and this is my favorite reverb sound overall.

Also now with the ReaComp knee bug being fixed, you can use it for more "character" duties and have it work predictably (with large knee/ratio settings). Check the attached preset. Use that on a snare. Adjust attack time to let more transient through when needed. Adjust threshold of course, and output (wet) level. I think it sounds great.

Yes yes, but keep in mind: You might easily be dragged
away from really good mixing if you spend your time with
searching for plugins.

IMO in Reaper there are nearly all tools that are needed
for very decent mixes. For mixing results your hearing
and your ability to identify frequencies is far more
important than additional plugins.

Now that Dragonfly Reverb has an independant decay time feature (allowing for up to 10s of reverb), it's become my favorite reverb:

https://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=212841

(Latest version with the new feature is linked in one of the latest posts only, since it's considered an "experimental" feature at the moment.)

Running a music school in a land where two coconuts conected with a string is "advanced communication" youd be surprised how much you forget and how quickly too
