Default MIDI sequencing doesn't work

Hey guys, I'm new to REAPER. I downloaded the program to evaluate it and everything related to audio works just fine. But I wanted to try and write some MIDI parts (totally in the box, I don't have a MIDI keyboard or any other controller) and it just doesn't work. Every new MIDI item is offline and won't open in the MIDI editor as it is supposed to. Any ideas?

Did you perhaps insert an Empty Item instead of a MIDI Item?

Otherwise can you please attach a screenshot to a post: https://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=140670
Since it's difficult to give any specific hints without knowing any details about your project or how the Item looks like, etc ...

I found a way to hook up my buddy's electric piano as a MIDI controller.
Now monitoring is fine, but I still can't record MIDI notes. The recorded Items that are supposed to have MIDI notes in them are offline.
The guide says I have to assign a Channel (supposedly MIDI channel) to the item, but it didn't explain how. Does anybody know?

It might be related to Preferences > Media > Set media items offline when application is not in use
But it would be much easier to diagnose the problem and suggest specific approaches, if you can attach either a screenshot (of the Track and MIDI file) or the .RPP Project File to a post.

If you're talking about chapter 3.30 Recording MIDI ("You will need to assign a Channel for the MIDI item"): By default MIDI channel 1 is used for recording MIDI notes to MIDI Items.

The easiest way would be to use Insert > virtual instrument on new track… (3.32 Recording With a Virtual Instrument) which sets up all necessary Track settings (MIDI input: all channels, Record armed + Input Monitoring enabled) automatically.
