Default No input monitoring during preroll/precount

I just discovered this annoyance (here's my request for help). Should I call it a glitch, buglet, misfeature? It is definitely not right.

During preroll or precount, monitoring is muted even for tracks that are record armed and therefore about to be recorded. In some workflows, this makes it impossible to listen to the signal before recording starts.

One such impossible workflow:

(Metronome set to, e.g., 2 bars preroll)
Place edit cursor where you want to start recording
Press Record
Play along for 2 bars before recording starts.

I'm betting there is a reason for this; I just can't imagine what it might be.

Monitoring of the armed record tracks during the ‘count in’ would be a nice option to have. I have not found a way to do this and it would help landing on the right beat when playing guitar.

I am not sure if this is not a feature request though?

I was reluctant to go through with a proper feature request, as if it were "too much trouble" for the developers, who have the greater good on their minds, so to say.

That's why I just typed up a half-hearted nitpick. If you feel like this deserves a proper FR, by all means go ahead! I will support it of course.

Maybe a link posted in this thread could help as a notice.

Thanks @Edgemeal (and @Lokasenna), I will try this when I have some time. I still think a feature like this should really be native.

I also found that annoying seems illogical to not hear your instrument before the actual recording.

I tried the script, and it seems to work for audio during count-in. My issue, however, was with MIDI during preroll.
Thanks anyway, @Edgemeal, it was kind of you to notice my request and reply.

I STILL think this should be native. I can't see a reason why monitoring (audio or midi) should be off before recording.

Bump

And MIDI recording (besides monitoring) during pre-roll would be even sweeter. Just like it is with audio, trimming out the recorded item's left edge should give us the MIDI data in the pickup.

There’s another thread mentioning this that I posted in… having this would really help when tracking guitars. My MV8800 does it and I’m used to it.

I’ll take a look and listen but I’ve really also just don’t pre-roll manually because visually it make snore sense to me.

It doesn't seem I'm having this behavior but I found a different bug.
