Default Guitar sounds "wool-ly" !!!

When I try to do what he does here - record a CLEAN guitar:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z4tOzcr94ks

it sound like shit - he shows a strat so I think it's a strat and mine is too !

It sounds way to "soft" with no treble and crunch !

CLEAN guitar - what am I doing wrong ?

Hi.
Things can affect the sound could be:
1. What pick-ups you have and are using and your tone setting
2. Condition of strings!
3. Interface used
4. How you listen to it
(Although if you are listening to it on the same way you view the demo this is probably not the cause of any difference.)

Is the guitar sounding OK when played clean through an amp? If so maybe try a DI from the amp?

You used the DI input (resp. the jack input set to "instrument")?

Yeah, I did and I have (nearly) the same interface as the demo (18i20).

BUT ...

maybe he did record the guitar with some EQ - but he DID say it was the guitar directly into the interface - yeah, that's true, but he TOO could have some EQ running !

I think it's strange there is so much difference as I experience here.

BUt maybe I'll just have to fool around with my settings and learn "how to" get the right sound.

Could be the length of guitar cable used??
Longer lengths have the same effect as rolling your tone control back a little bit.....
Probably not, but Just a thought.

there are probably hundreds of different pickups available for Strats, some are dirty, some are clean, too many variables to be able to know. He could have any number of pedals between his Strat and the interface, it is still "going straight into the input" as it is not going into an amp, at least I have read it used in that sense.

No, he could not have pedals in between guitar and interface - he is not showing that ... and then we're back to what I said: He's not telling exactly what he has done when recording the "clean" guitar.

At the end of the day, I think his CLEAN guitar sounds what I would like to hear as a CLEAN guitar and I must just experience that mine does NOT sound like that when inserted directly into the interface.

Let's stop it here before it evolves into cable types/length and other more psycological factors - I've got what I needed so I stop here ;-))

👍 yep it is what it is 👍
If it's still not sounding right, try different chord inversions future down the neck and/or EQing the 'wool' out. That's what it's there for after all 😎

Upload a clip of your DI guitar sound. It will help. And also your guitar info as far as model and pickups.

On any decent Strat, if the tone knob is full up and the volume knob was well (if it's not 100% it will lose top end not just volume) it *should* be close to what the video has. Does your guitar sound OK through an amp and not wooly? If it does it's one thing, if not it's another : ) He might have great pickups and yours might be weak (I have a cheap strat and a '66 Fender (sadly with a '68 neck so no big value : ( ) and at identical settings they are different as night and day. The cheap SX with their passive stock pickups are pretty sad sounding : /

Plus, he might have expensive aftermarket active pickups for all we know : ) But you shouldn't sound too wooly.

Mentioned earlier:
- Guitar itself plays a role
- Guitar Setup plays a role (Pickups, Strings, etc.)
- Interface plays a role

But:
One other thing you should have in mind is the way you play the guitar!

If you play a recording smooth, it will always sound smooth, regardless what effect you apply. If you want to sound it dynamic, you have to play it dynamic.

Also:
The way you play has influence on your recording levels, etc...

Setting up a clean recording takes me more time than recording itself!

My money goes on new strings. They make a huge difference if you want a more "jangly" tone.
