Default Song - Feel It!

Here's a song I brought back from the dead last night.

It features a vocalist friend of mine Michael Summers singing the lead and backing vocals. I'm playing bass, keyboards, singing some of the backing vocals, most of the guitars, and drums. Joey Larsen plays some additional rhythm guitar, the Strat solo in the middle, and the SG solo at the end. It was originally recorded 03/14/2004 in Cakewalk Sonar, but the only stereo master I had was a demo that faded out after the first verse from before the song was ever completed.

So I decided to fire up Sonar last night and try to make a new stereo mix, but the song was so old that I no longer had the drum and organ hardware it originally used, and a lot of plugins were missing too, so I exported all the audio one track at a time, then the MIDI, which was the drums and Hammond B3, then imported it all into REAPER. Finally I used my 1962 Ludwig drums from Superior Drummer on it, and Native Instruments B4 Hammond organ for the missing MIDI rack mount hardware instruments.

I used all new plugins for the EQ, compression, reverb, limiting, Etc., and made this new mix of it. It was a good enough song to spend the time rescuing, and now I've finished the mix and put it up on my music page. I'm glad this song is back from the dead, if only I could do the same with Joey, rest his soul. :-/

Song title is "Feel It!" at:

Nicely done! The mix is very clear and open.

Thanks Byron. I was glad to get this project saved from Sonar and moved to REAPER. I had forgotten that I originally used a Roland M-VS1 Vintage Synth rack module for the Hammond, and a pair of Alesis D4 and DM5 rack modules for the drum sounds. Using Native Instruments B4 and Superior Drummer 2 sounds better than the original.

Thanks! The vocals are a friend of mine, who is a great singer. His vocal range is so wide and precise that he can sing anything. Right now he's into old school big band jazz stuff like the crooners sing.

Thanks! The backing vocals are three tracks of me and three tracks of Michael doubling three part harmony.

Yep, indeed was worth rescuing, totally impressive in every regard. Crazy what some people have stashed in their drawers.

Thanks Zeekat!

I'm going to have to go on an exploration of all the old stuff I have archived and see what else I might have forgotten about.

Great remix. Vocals fall between Henley and Boston in a good way! Well worth the re-visit.

Thanks Barry. I'm glad it's where I can play and mix it again.

Wow! Nicely done. You did an awesome job resurrecting this tune. Maybe you can call it The Lazarus Song! LOL!

I love the bass sound, nice and fat and round and present and articulate, but without sounding boomy or muddy at all. Great job mixing the vocals. A very fun song to listen to, with a catchy guitar solo too.

I faced a similar situation.....old tunes recorded in Sonar, but the audio was not really up to par, and the midi instruments were long since lost. All I had were the stereo mixes, and I felt I was getting better results in Reaper, using newer plugins like Superior Drummer and Pianoteq. So I ended up simply re-recording the entire list of songs in Reaper. Much happier with the results.

Thanks! There may be an import tool available soon to open Sonar projects in Reaper. There's an alpha being tested currently, so it may be easier to pull old projects out of Sonar and get them into Reaper to revive like I did with this one.
