why waveform edge distinction?
I wonder, why does Reaper distinguish graphically between the waveform edge and the waveform itself? When I look at apps with waveforms that I consider "good" (esp. waveforms where you can get a visual sense of the pitch and timbre, such as PT or Cool Edit) they always have a solid color waveform.

yeah, I feel the same way about it. It can be disabled to just show solid color, then when zoomed in it'll turn into a "wireframe" of the waveform - that's the best I can get it
just uncheck the following under "Appearance > Media":
- Draw fancy edge on peaks
- Fill waveforms and draw edges when zoomed in
- Show discrete samples when zoomed in closer
- Show samples as filled bars

Big problem is - if you turn fancy edges off....
This happens!

understood, drew. but isn't that a problem with the color theme? i mean, all Justin can do is program an element to display whatever color your theme tells it to.
may be time to change your theme.

Sadly this is just using the plain theme - so I guess it's not color theme related? (although it does rule out using quite a lot of nice lighter colors).
This happens when you select a random track color - the background of a highlighted item is always lighter than the track color (at the moment). That means you either need to use fancy edges or have heavier, darker colors.
If this something fixable by modifying (slightly) the plain theme? Any advice appreciated!
Just to confirm - I haven't changed the color theme at all, so this happens with the "plain" mode. But obviously was intrigued by the thread title and wondered if it could give any answers!
I initially thought the foreground & background on a selected item of a colored track would just be inverted, but it's not so.

the default theme does it too?
ahhhhhh... well, that does change things. Since your link took me to a thread with a diff theme shown, i ASSUMED...
and there in lies the trouble!
yeah, id' guess Justin might be wise to change the logic on the Random Color thing to exclude colors already chosen for waveforms, huh?

Ditto. Exact same settings here too.
I really hope Justin gets a chance to look at the waveform side of things at some point soon. We've discussed it in a few threads... overall the wave display is below par comapred to, say, Vegas' waveform. And it's particulary bad when it 'jumps' to that different mode at higher zoom levels. Horrible for editing IMO... which is what I do all day
A nice consistently high resolution waveform display is much needed, and would be great

Yeh, I've noticed that too. There was a big think on the nuendo forum a few years ago about zooming and the waveform displays and how it all interacts.

well, the peaks cache could be lower, but then the wireframe gets funky looking...
http://www.cockos.com/forum/showthread.php?t=5075
something I notice alot in vegas, though, is that virtical zooming of the cached waveform you can see stepping in the bit-depth... so those peaks must be pretty low-fi.. I'm guess REAPERs are not-so...
I think peak waveforms definately draw alot faster then if you were to compare each sample against one another and only show the loudest one, just a hunch...
