Item Volume Shortcomings
Three things 1, you would never know it,s there by just looking at an item 2, only allows you to decrease volume 3, won't allow you to add envelop points.

1. It's in the manual, 2. it can be set to inf...+6dB in Prefs->Media, 3. that's what take envelopes are for.

Looked in the preferences and didn't see anything and take envelops are fine and dandy but they are buried in the menu, I personally think that some thing as basic as volume control should be upfront and center. Also the lines between Items and Takes are getting blurred, why two separate labels for them if they are treated the same???? Just nitpicking.

The distinction between per-item and per-take follows logic:
If a function/option applies only on an overall item base, it's referred to as "item something", if it acts on takes, it's called "take something" but that implies items as well, since there are no items without takes (it's always at least one take or it's empty). So "per-take" means it works per-take if there are takes and per item if there are "no takes". Per-item would mean it does not work per-take. Everything falling into place now? :

if you type volume into the finder in the prefs you soon are directed to Media => Media item volume adjustment range.
Item volume handle and fades affect all takes of an item. Take volume envelopes affect the take they are applied to. So while you can have multiple take envelopes in a multitake item, you can only have one item volume and one set of item fades.
You have a point that take envelopes should be more prominent in the default. Some long time users only just found out they exist.

No, an item is a container that contains at least one take or multiple of them. Things that apply to 'item' will affect all takes in there the same, even if there is only one single take contained.
So in case you have just a single take in an item you can dare to say 'item' is equal to 'take', though strictly speaking it is not. Just looks and feels as if. The item stuff will remain to work on items, the take stuff on takes.

I see the light, thanks for the patience (don't use the take system I tend to stay away from that mine field), but it seems to me that the item volume and take volume do the same thing (when a item contains no other takes) only difference I see is that the take volume has more features, it would be great to have all this functionality in the item volume as well (so we don't have to go digging around in the menus to add a take volume envelop). If I'm missing something here please explain.

Speaking of take and item volume handles, when selecting multiple takes/items, is there a way to have them all change at the same time instead of tweaking each one individually? Or did I just miss this in the manual?

Well there is an action "Toggle take volume envelope" so you could assign a key to it in the action list, or you can edit your media item context menu under Customize menu/toolbars and move it to an easily accessible spot in the menu.
