Default track faders move ... gloompily

It seems like now when I grab a fader and move it, it "hops"about, as if there's a brief lag then it catches up... it appears to be a behavior, not a glitch.

I presume this might have something to do with a thread I saw about fader hysteresis? Something to do with automation?

It makes if feel like (with the mouse... all I've got...) I have a rough 4 or 5 detents on the faders to choose from, it's hard to control minute amounts.

(but if the fader popped to a large "long throw" version, it would be even easier...)

(presuming the "magnetic vector" behavior is stopped....)

"gloompily"...good word!

Nothing worthwhile to add, though. Sorry.

I get this moving EVERYTHING around in reaper, it's strange, I have a fast PC, and other programs respond quickly. hmm, I'm glad I'm not alone on this, that's for sure

If you undock the mixer, you can make the faders as long throw as your screen, pretty cool

Or, if you need more precise adjustment, just hold down ctrl while dragging the fader.

mouse wheel works as well.... which reminds me, does anyone make a "knob" that acts as the mouse wheel? I tried finding one years ago with no luck, I like simply hovering my mouse over something and manually "turning" it instead of annoying "click-drag", wtc... sorry, a bit off topic

I don't want to use the screen space; and I don't want to add additional steps to my workflow.

I want the fader to pop to a long throw automatically when I hover over it.

something is seriously wronge if your faders have "detents"

if you meant your mouse wheel has detents, well, so does mine, I guess (not exactly sure what you mean) you can also hold down "Ctrl" while mouse wheeling to go less then 0.1 increments per "detent", plenty fine?

I do remember talk of haveing the mouse "stick" to the fader and move slower, I always thought that was a good idea, I'd use it for sure!

Notice I was replying to the comment about using my *mouse wheel*. My MOUSE WHEEL has detents.

What I mean is that it has detents.

A potentiometer with detents has many equidistant-spaced mechanical "bumps" in it's travel where the rotation stops. I suppose if you've never ever turned a pot with detents that doesn't mean anything, but that's as precise a description as I can make.

No. The problem is that my mouse wheel does not *mechanically* roll continuously, but in detented increments, making smooth adjustment impossible.

LOL, good grief, mine has "detents" too... gar, I'm confused... why does having detents prevent you from using the mouse wheel again?? What mouse do you have exactly, is it some strange off-brand, non-standard, mouse wheel with extra special "detents" that act like no other regular mouse with mouse wheel? sorry, I hope I don't come off sounding rude, I'm really trying to help.

I think what Chip talking about is with the detents, it's hard to get a nice smooth fader action happening. Somebody made a neat little controller once upon a time... Shuttle or something like that? Seems it had a neat knob in the center which rotated smoothly. IRC, it could be programmed to emulate your standard ol' rat... What was that thing... ugh... this is like having the title of THAT song right on the tip of your tounge...

D

PS The CTRL modifier moves the fader in 0.01 dB increments.

yeah I remember, but I was never quite sure if that "shuttle" controller did mouse wheel actions. look like it does:
http://www.mediachance.com/dvdlab/Helppro/shuttle.htm
I must be thinking every mouse wheel has indents, even those that does "feel" like they do, they still send either an "up" or a "down" command when moved, and no velocity type value at all.

I've been thinking of just ripping apart a mouse, and sticking a big knob on the mouse wheel rotater, maybe one of those shadow hills nova ones, I think that would give me my fix! blah...

Good idea.

In the meantime you could assign a key to toggle dock/undock mixer, that's pretty fast.

Because in a thread where I'm complaining about "gloompy" fader movement, turning a mouse wheel that goes "clunk, clunk, clunk" isn't exactly something I want to do, either. It's not like Penny & Giles ever made detented faders....

Yeah, it's very esoteric, it's made by this exotic firm "Microsoft" and can only be bought at boutique stores called "WalMart".

There's nothing to help unless you're named "Justin" or "Christophe": the faders move gloompily, and I'd like them to automatically enlarge when I hover over them because I *prefer* to drag it over a long throw.
