Repeating my desperate request to include MidiToReaControlPath in the basic repository !

How can this be done without violating any license ?

(AFAIK, just redistributing MidiToReaControlPath is not possible due to licensing issues.)

I do think this is rather appropriate.
I'm curious to hear your viewpoint. In my opinion user guides should be on demand.

As far as I know non-JS FX cannot go in REAPER's resource folder. (If MidiToReaControlPath was a REAPER extension instead of a VST, getting permission would be the only issue.)
ReaPack is bound to one self-contained REAPER installation. System-wide files would cause ReaPack to wrongly think something is installed (or the contrary) when portable installations are involved.

My opinion is that it would be very handy to install the documentation with the package, but if there are certain limitations they of course need to be acknowledged.

Would that mean that ReaPack can't handle plain old VSTs ? In fact I suppose that VST's can be installed anywhere, but the Reaper VST Search path needs to be set accordingly, which ReaPack supposedly could do.

MidiToReaControlPath is as well a VST as a binary Reaper extension. So I understand it needs to be installed in the location where Reaper finds extensions (Supposedly e.g. "Program Files/Reaper/Extensions"). Same supposedly is protected by the OS and needs admin permission. AFAIK there is a standard for installation tools on how to handle this. From the docs I supposed that ReaPack already can manage binary Reaper extensions (".ext")

Oh indeed! Audio Units can only be put in two locations on macOS so I just shut my brain off and assumed VST was the same... Thanks!

Well, this only leaves MIDItoReaControlPath's license issue to solve.

That's right. Package files with the extension type are installed into the UserPlugins directory.
This would work: 1) Use .ext 2) Add UserPlugins to the VST search path.

However as a .ext it would be labeled as "Extension", which is kind of wrong (and even more for VSTs other than MIDItoReaControlPath).
MIDItoReaControlPath really seems to be a VST only. It may use the REAPER extension API but that is different from a true extension (eg. SWS, ReaPack, control surface integration).

Using .jsfx (labeled as "Effect") wouldn't work well either because the VST's files would also be listed as JS effects in REAPER's FX browser.
I'm considering creating a new package type for this. I'll try this.

Hey, guys. It's the second time I synchronize packages and it installs all scripts/jsfx. Did I miss something?

Do you mean that, every time you run "Synchronize packages", it reinstalls all 500+ packages? It should only install updates, missing files or new packages (the latter only if the option "Install new packages automatically" is enabled).

Yes, it installs them all.

Also, wasn't the browse packages windows resizable?

Is the option "Install new packages automatically" enabled in Manage repositories > Options?

The browser window is resizable in the upcoming v1.1 update.

It was enabled, was it the cause?

Can I use the RC2 already?

Thanks!

I don't think so, but try disabling it anyway and see it it helps.

- In the browser, is there an "i" in front of all entries? ("i" for "installed")
- Are the script/jsfx files correctly installed in the resource directory? (The filenames must not end with ".new")

Yes, it should be quite stable as it's almost ready for release.

Tried sync packages again with the option disabled and uninstalled items did not install, good.

Quote:

The ´I´ appeared in front of all entries, also on the ones i had never installed.

I reinstalled before checking this.

Trying RC2, so far so good. Thanks for your help.

That's the normal effect of the option: it makes ReaPack install all non-installed packages it finds. Now that it's disabled you can uninstall any packages you don't want from the browser window.
(Do not delete the files manually outside of ReaPack as it would then attempt put them back the next time you run Synchronize, thinking it's repairing a broken script.)

Glad its working now.

Any news regardin MidiToReaControlPath ?

( I am always promoting Reaper as the most versatile (embedded) live VST playing tool, and for this MidiToReaControlPath is essential. )

Thanks,

So i guess you never update REAPER either? You could use another machine to get the updates. Save the configuration (be sure to include scripts and JSFX). Then import it to your DAW.

Not to mention the ongoing "customer" support here in this thread. Seriously cfillion thousand thanks for your time and effort for the benefit of the community!

PS. if you guys got any spare resources, I'd seriously consider sending some in cfillion's way. Talk about well-deserved.

Even SWS doesn't have its own subforum :P

But technically you can use the Reapack GitHub repo bug tracker if you want open a reapack related threads.

This might be a good idea, as well, especially if the ideas might be necessary to be considered that the support for SWS needs to be distributed on multiple volunteers.

In future hopefully ReaPack might be grow to be an integrated platform for closely Reaper related stuff that (for certain reasons) is not part of the Reaper distribution but can be found (!!!) and loaded if useful and desired. (Hence on the long run, SWS - monolithicly, or maybe even better divided in multiple packets - should be found in ReaPack as well. (So a single subforum would be enough ).

I uploaded another file "mschnell_Slider to Midi PS.jsfx"

I created a pull request, but I fail to see any action on behalf of same.

Am I doing something wrong or did the github GUI change ?

If we want to do that, I will try to do a start with an "about" section, providing some basic searchable information and links to detailed documentation PDFs.

Unfortunately I am only knowledgeable regarding SWS LiveConfigs (here I did an update to the rather outdated an restricted dedicated documentation PDF, that we can link to, as well).

In your personal opinion, whoever wishes to answer this, what would be say, the top 5 most key improvements to reaper from installing this. I understand that it's sort of a tool to easily install a number of features, but I'm just wondering what sort of features we're talking about, and what the ones people find are most useful are for.

In my very personal opinion the most important tools are those that are necessary to make Reaper an (embedded) live-VST Player, similar to (but a lot more versatile and - including the necessary hardware - a lot cheaper then) the (now seemingly discontinued) Muse Receptor, or similar (but more versatile and - regarding that Reaper "additionally" can be used for Recording etc as a very decent DAW - cheaper then) software like Ableton Live, Rack Performer or Forte.

I did this using SWS Live-Configs, MIDIToReaControlPath, and some of my own Midi JSFX helpers.

Because it will, hopefully, just grow and grow to become the defacto choice for distributing scripts: if it isn't already.

It's a long overdue and fantastic addition for REAPER, that deservers sponsorship from Cockos.

+1 !

As it is small, it already works great and can be the defacto choice for distributing any add-ons, IMHO it should be part of the distribution and already be installed out of the box. Maybe it indeed should stay in the "Extensions" menu, as it is the standard way to fetch and install any extensions (even though of course different ways to install them would stay in place).

All SWS and ReaPack functionality should really be natively part of Reaper.

Why not have SWS (or even better multiple parts of same independently) be installable via ReaPack ?

In Github I see that the file is released in JSFX/Utility/. But it does not appear in ReaPack after resyncing.

BTW.: How come that it is (IMHO correctly) moved to "utility" ? Did you need to do that manually ? Can't the file provider already suggest this ?

I wish I could (easily) remove more parts of SWS - clutters up my action list. A few things you can choose not to install, but most of it is locked in.

ReaPack is great in that you have more freedom of what you actually install,

@mschnell
The reapack-index bot failed to process the commit because of today's DNS outage. I just ran it locally: your FX in the list now.
It was already in the Utility folder in the pull request.

I didn't have time to experiment on the dedicated VST support feature yet. I fear the requirement of having to update the VST path and fix it whenever the resource path changes (especially for portable installations) might be too much of a hassle.

I need to correct some glitches in the about text and upload a new version, soon.

As discussed here, IMHO it makes much sense to do a tighter integration of ReaPAck in Reaper. So maybe Cockos might be able to tweak Reaper to provide some means do do this in a decent way.

I just tried VST support. It does works, provided that the VST search path is manually edited anytime the resource path is different, as expected.
I'm putting this aside for now though, until there is interest from VST developers. I do not think I should do this only for MIDIToReaControlPath.

Agreed. Please do think about a general solution. Please do contact the Reaper developers about including ReaPack in the Reaper distribution, as I really think it's a game changer helping them to support lots of feature Requests (e.g. wining that Reaper does not come with VSTs and VSTis included in the distribution (as with Cubase for $999), complaining about the look, but not able to find appropriate Themes, complaining about non existing support for certain hardware DAW-Controllers, complaining about certain actions not being easily accessible in the GUI, ... (and of course me complaining that Reaper is the best live VST player software, but it's hard to configure it appropriately ) )

I already did post an appropriate feature request.

Any comment about MIDIToReaControlPath licensing issues ?
