Default Reaper 6.71: Glitchy Playback Issue Resolved By Downgrade to 6.70

After upgrading to Reaper 6.71 I began to experience glitchy project playback with buffering issues, clicks and pops, even under a light CPU load. I performed fairly extensive troubleshooting which included freezing tracks and systematically enabling/disabling CPU intensive plugins (by Slate Digital, Izotope, Sonnox, Audio Ease, Zynaptiq and Waves); nothing helped. At length I decided to downgrade Reaper to 6.70 and the issues immediately ceased and normal playback resumed.

I use Reaper predominantly for audio post-production. In this case I was mixing one of a number of episodes of a TV series on which we are currently working.

macOS Monterey 12.6.1
MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2018)
2.9 GHz 6-Core Intel Core i9
32 GB 2400 MHz DDR4
Radeon Pro Vega 16 4 GB

Default Unrelated

Good afternoon

I currently live in Vancouver, but would love to check out your
studio when I'm back visiting.
I realize that's a pretty big ask as you don't know me, but as
a former Winnipeg resident, I'm always interested to see
what's happening in my favourite city.

Cheers

Hopefully this was fixed in 6.73? Let us know!

What was it? (can't spot it in the change log)

Default glitchy playback

I have this issue when I leave a project open for a few hours and then come back to it. I have to close the project and reopen it , then it is back to normal.

Default Glitchy Playback Issue Resolved

Sorry for the delayed reply. I initially stuck with Reaper 6.70 as I needed to finish a number of complex projects on a very tight timeline. I upgraded to 6.73 shortly after its release and the glitching issue was resolved. However, I did note more frequent Reaper crashes with 6.73, which is an issue that I haven't experienced with Reaper in a long time. These were greatly reduced after I upgraded to 6.75. On another note, two weeks ago I upgraded my computer to an M2 Max 16 inch MacBook Pro (64 GB Memory, Ventura) and so far everything has gone surprisingly smoothly with Reaper. I've been able to open those complex audio post projects that I created on my Intel MacBook Pro with very few issues. I have also started audio post on another TV series on my new MacBook Pro. I am sending and receiving Reaper projects to and from my team (dialog, Foley/sound effects, music edits, etc.). They are working on both MacOS and Windows platforms, some on Intel processors and others on M series Apple processors. It's all working amazingly well, so thanks for the great work Justin and team!
