Default new JS effect - paranoia (mangler)!

ok, let's try that again!

paranoia (destructive mangler)

designed to injure your sound in terrible ways. import the included preset library to get a feel for what it can do.

installation:

Now included with Reaper

controls:

* input gain: gain into processing circuit (doesn't affect dry mix)
* dry out: amount of clean signal to mix in
* wet out: amount of broken signal to mix in

* resampler: aliasing resampler. lower is worse.

* bitcrusher: off disables (including next two controls). on is "normal" mode. on+noisier is a buggy implementation that sounds cool on bassdrums.
* thermonuclear war: bit manipulation pattern. 0 is disabled, anything higher than that and you're on your own. highly material dependent. optimized for 8-10 bitdepth, below 8 and it could get even gnarlier.
* bitdepth: bit reduction, 10-3 bit. lower is worse.

* gate: simple one-knob gate. anything below 50% will leak some ungated signal through. use above 50% when bitcrusher is set to 'noisy' to stop it completely freaking out.

* attitude/love/jive: post-processing filter (off/LP/BP/HP)

this plugin is very material dependent - a lot of stuff is unusable through it, but some stuff just works really well. works best on dynamic stuff like single drum tracks.

feedback and criticism gratefully accepted!

ok, it's posted now, sorry about that!

make sure you get the preset library, it does a lot of stuff and it's a bit overwhelming without a starting point.

Cheers!

The gate isn't perfect - so if it goes silent try tweaking that.

It's a bit of a weird effect but I'm pleased with how it came out. Pretty sure it's riddled with bugs tho :-)

btw, the bug in "on+noisier" bit reducer causes the output to flip between +ve/-ve (matching the sign of the input) regardless of the level of the signal coming in, even for incredibly small input values. i found it sounds awesome on some material but emits a huge amount of noise on most sources.

the only off thing that i've ran into so far is thermonuclear war goes silent between around 15-16.

might be a bug, but that can definitely happen if your bitdepth is less than 8. each whole number on the thermonuclear war slider corresponds to a different bit pattern. the bit pattern is shifted up/down correctly for different bitdepths, but some of the bit patterns have a lot of '0's in them.

anything in-between whole numbers interpolates between the two patterns on either side (you'll notice most of the presets use whole number values).

yea, it only happens at lower bitdepths. it might even be useful having a dead spot at the end of the slider for realtime tweaking.

some more info...

from 1-5, the bit patterns are pretty mild - 1 or 2 bits disabled or flipped, just adds some sizzle/early digital type sound.

6 and 7 add a lot of nasty harmonics, and from 8 onwards it gets into total destruction territory.

I've accidentally had some amazing results with this when I buss all my sends into paranoia. Somehow it's helping them gel together while also increasing the sense of space in my reverbs. Very psychedelic and unexpected.... cheers!

Half of its effect is coming from its name.

(...oops, slow reply) it's an original design, but the sound is inspired by the oto biscuit.
