Shortcuts not useable when no window focus?
Hi Justin,
I'm having a major problem with the way shortcuts work in Reaper.
Those shortcuts calling the mixer, Undo History, Performance Window, Editors etc should be available from ANY window that has focus. As it is now, when I'm in the Routing Matrix i.e., I would first have to grab the mouse, click in the main (arrangement) window and only then could I use the shortcuts again to call the mixer i.e.
This defies the need for them though, as it would have been quicker then to simply select the mixer tab when grabbing my mouse. No?
While we're at it, could you maybe implement a way to cycle through the tabs in the docker? This would be a really handy feature. As many others (I guess), I tend to dock all optional windows (Mixer, Undo History, Navigator, Routing Matrix etc.), undock it from the main window and enlarge it to be displayed on my secondary monitor. Without being able to cycle through the tabs, we still need to use the mouse way more than would/should be necessary.
Also, there's still another problem with shortcuts, as I already pointed out in September in THIS THREAD.
Could you maybe have a look at these things Justin? They start to become very annoying.
Many thanks
Raphael

I agree with everything Raphael wrote!
======================================
+1 for active shortcuts on unfocused windows (transport,...)
+1 for "cycle through the tabs" shortcuts (really cool idea!)

Thanks Dandruff for pointing me to this thread.

Happens here too.
A part from the excessive CPU use on older machines (so it seems at least, my PC included), the whole shortcut-, view- and other options still have some way to go.
While 1.46/.47 brought some ease for the CPU, I can still not use Reaper for serious projects here. Maybe if you're exclusively doing Audio work (Editing, tracking, mastering?) it will be possible on 'non 64-Bit' machines, but using some VSTi's and FX I simply can't. And I think I've been through most (if not all) of the possible tweaks and configuration options. And since I don't have the funds for replacing my old PC parts ATM, I can't use Reaper except for dabbling with new features/options etc. Just to see where development is heading in fact.
Best regards
Raphael

Another related example is that when using a single screen PC with the docker floating, you have to click on the main window before you can use alt/d to hide the docker, which is a pity as you're likely to have the docker focussed having just used it.

Sweet! This is one thing I always forget to mention. It's not a showstopper by any stretch, but sometimes it's a little annoying.
Thanks, J!

Justin,
1.51 brought good improvements on shortcuts, that are now working regardless focused window, but it seems like only for defaults.
Example:
CTRL+RIGHT(or LEFT)- forward (backward) a little bit and
SPACE - PLAY/STOP works OK now,
but I assigned them to F6,F7 and F8 and my shortcuts won't work at focused FX CHAIN, but works well when focused at PERFORMANCE METER.
Another thing: "Colored clips". It's cruical for my workflow! Please, please, please...

This is a pretty major upgrade on the workflow front - now I can spacebar play from the effects window then alt-d to get rid of the docker, it's like a whole new program - these points of detail can actually make all the difference. It's also to do with fulfilling intuitive expectations for new users. Good stuff - thanks!

yeah, there still things left.
i've assigned F2 to "show docker". it works doesn't work for most tabs when the undocked docker has focus. seems http://www.cockos.com/forum/showpost...24&postcount=4 has changed a bit:
fx browser -> F2 => nothing happens
media explorer -> F2 => nothing happens
undo history -> F2 => nothing happens
performance -> F2 => works as it should (docker gets hidden)
navigator -> F2 => works as it should (docker gets hidden)
routing matrix -> F2 => nothing happens
then i've assigned F12 for the performance meter.
fx browser -> F12 => nothing happens
media explorer -> F12 => nothing happens
undo history -> F12 => nothing happens
performance -> F12 => works as it should (performance window gets hidden)
navigator -> F12 => works as it should (performance window gets hidden or reopened)
routing matrix -> F12 => nothing happens
and please:
when clicking the close button in the unattached docker: please just hide the docker instead attaching it to the main-window! thanks!

For the FX windows and most of the other windows, and I believe this is mentioned in the whatsnew.txt, only keyboard shortcuts that use ctrl or alt (or plain space) in them are passed on. I'll update this to include all forms of function keys as well-- but the idea is that things like letters, numbers etc with no modifiers are more likely to be needed to enter text for a plug-in etc, than for a shortcut (i.e. hitting S should __NOT__ split items from the fx window).

you mean F2 will never work in the docked fx-browser to show/hide the docker because F2 is used to rename plugins in the fx-browser? makes sense. maybe i really should use another hotkey then ...
