Default Way to tint arrange view area in color of folder tracks

This is feature from Logic Pro. It paints arrange view in the color of the folder track and adds a light text to arrange area. it’s so much easier to navigate the project.

I think it will be super handy to have a such feature in the Reaper. To be honest, this is the only thing i miss in Reaper, especially in big sessions with 200+ tracks.

This already can be done in Reaper, go to "Options/Preferences/Appearances" and adjust the settings you want.
To color the Tracks/Folders, Select the Tracks you want Colored and then Right Click and Select "Track Color" and select a color.

He's not talking about coloring the tracks/folders or items themselves. He's talking about tinting the space in the arrange page adjacent to the track similar to the track color. Take a look at the basses track and the bass track in the screenshot - both with no items. But the arrange page next to the basses track (and the ones underneath) is tinted slightly green and next to the bass track the arrange page is tinted slightly blue. It's subtle but very effective.

AFAIK, there is no way to do this in Reaper in the arrange page on a track-by-track basis using the track color.

Yup, that’s a brilliant UI design choice. Would be very cool to have that in REAPER, since it’s definitely not possible right now.

That would help for big sessions! +1

Folder tracks' name repeated in the arrange view would be very helpful too.

This is a really really good idea, I hope the devs consider it soon.

I also can't imagine it being that crazy to implement. Here's to hoping -- would be a huge visual and functional enhancement to the entire DAW.

I like this idea.

It's a simple, yet very clean, way of maintaining visual clarity in a big project.

It is not.

Would be so good for quickly finding stuff. Separating lead vocals from harms, doubles etc. Kicks from Snares etc.

Meanwhime, you can use this script as a workaround this:

MC - TCP Folder Separator in Arrange View

Is there a place to put comments about WALTER while this is being discussed?

Example : in projects with many nested folders (for organization and group processing) it's nearly impossible to tell what belongs to what.

Currently you have to constantly scan back to the TCP to view Folder Membership, every single time, simply to know what folder a track belongs to. Even then, it's based on indentation which means we're now also scanning vertically to view folder membership. In complex projects this edges on impossible, nearly discarding the usefulness of using folders.

The ability to color/tint the Arrange background per-track would provide an incredibly simple way to create visual separation. ie, "these tracks go together", or "these tracks are LEAD INSTRUMENTS, these are PADS", "Kicks are Red, Snares are Blue". Zero ambiguity.

^^^ this thought came from trying to organize stuff in Lanes, which again suffers from a lack of visual cues amidst the clutter. Which tracks are comps? Which are takes? Tuned comps vs untuned? Vocaligned vs raw? etc

Seems so. Maybe it's on the devs radar? I didn't think it was particularly off topic. I've seen a lot worse on the pre's...

Yeah it was directly on topic with how Lanes are seriously amplifying the visual information overload, and that sorting this out would also sort this issue more generally at the project level.

X-Raym :

This is so close, but where it suffers is that it only shows the Folder Start, and not the Folder End.

In a perfect world, the start and end of a folder would be blatantly obvious in Arrange View. This script take care of half the problem!

Is it at all feasible to modify this (or create a workflow) where there is a colored separator at both the start and end?

@ferropop
I also realized that the OP screenshot has tinted background which the solution I posted has not. I dont think it could be scripted in an efficient way.

Anyway as general rules, I use try not to use more than 3 levels of indentations. Else it is unreadable, so I use Sends in these cases.

I also made a script which display parents of the first selected track

It is unreleased prototype. I considered adding parent FX / metters on this also but I didnt have projects but in the end I realize I was still mostly watching TCP so it wasn't worth it.

Another strategy could be on names

Top level track: UPPERCASE
Child track: Title Case
Child Child track: Title Case - Suffix

for eg

GUITAR → Guitare Disto → Guitar Disto - Left

--
In resume, the OP request is totally valid cause none of this is a perfect solution.

Appreciate your efforts always X-Raym!

Beyond this script, ability to natively Tint Track Background based on some criteria is becoming almost essential with new lanes modes.

Using track color to tint item background is the cloest thing we have. But this is helpful only if there are items on the track section in view of course.

Yup, devs have been doing some work on WALTER so hoping they pick up this (seemingly) simple and infinitely useful FR!

I wouldn't enjoy navigating that project. Colored tracks and items for me are just fine.

To show my lack of support for this FR, lol. Navigating 200 tracks by words is imo ridiculous. Much simpler to just color code and use the navigator than doing everything from the arrange. But my projects top out at 100 tracks so... *shrug*

The words do nothing for me either, it's the track background tinting that is currently not possible and very useful.

There's a million ways you could use this - to visually separate folders/groups in the Arrange View specifically as currently you have to be constantly tracing back to the TCP, then tracing down to see the start/end points of the folder, and on a 4k Monitor this is lunacy - cognitively your focus is now on doing triangulation and you've completely forgotten the media items you were working on by the time you figure out "yes I in fact Am in the correct folder!".

...or, BLUE ok great.

I actually added Track Separators to my "create folder from selected tracks" custom action. A separator at the top and bottom makes it visually "feel" more like a folder is a unit in Arrange. They can't be individually colored though, no.
