Default Why I don't like Kenny's videos

Let's take the subject of compressor's he doesn't give a complete description of various types of compressor's it's like his video is one type fits all compression needs.

Yet another confrontational post... don`t you ever get tired of trying to wind people up?

The toning down of your pseudo-religious sig is however appreciated.

Maybe he is describing ReaComp and ReaXComp exclusively...

No Opto, VariTube, VoltCo (VCA), Transist (FET) emulations.

I'm sure if he did, someone would complain it's too long...

Ah, the burden of choice. And shouldn't you fill te gap, maybe?

The REAPER videos are in general designed and intended to be REAPER specific, not to cover everything you could ever possibly wish to know about every aspect of audio. Third party VST plug-ins as a rule lie well outside this scope.

If you're unhappy about this, I'm sure many here would appreciate you plugging what you see as the gaps by making your own videos and posting them.

What a weird issue to have with ALL of my videos. I think I have 1 or 2 videos on compression.

Here are my complaints:

1. Sick of that intro. Just get to it Gioia.
2. He has a very thick New Yawk accent.
3. He talks too slow and takes too many pauses. Spit it out buddy.
4. He swallows his L sounds. Like Tom Brokaw.
5. He over talks and over explains everything.
6. He shows 3 examples when only 1 is necessary. Get to the point.
7. He spends too much time editing. Every mouse move doesn't need to be perfect.
8. His voice modulates up too often as if he's asking a question. When he's not.
9. His voice can be a bit too sing songy.
10. He spends too much time responding to criticism.

I would like to take a different approach on your complaint.
I think you, cutnpaste, like Kenny's videos and how he explaines things right to the point...

You just wanted him to make a video on the types of compressors, did't you? So finally you could get a nice and good understanding of it!

Keep it up Kenny, a "sing songy" voice is a relief to hear from an American, it beats a monotone vocal fry any day!

All you need to know is that the red ones work best for vocals,

and the yellow ones are more multi-purpose.

there are surely about a million articles/videos on the web about how compression works and "types", explaining it in a myriad of ways.
The videos are about reaper.
I know my way around reaper for most of what I use it for now. But I referenced the videos constantly as I was learning it, and they were indispensable. I of course still use them when I am going to do something I haven't done before because a ton of different techniques are described.

the only thing containing more useful information is a tweet from ...Never mind, that belongs in the lounge...I am glad there is a lounge so I don't have read all that b.s. Thanks whoever came up with the lounge!

Yeah, that's the spirit! Blame others for your incapability to learn how to use music production tools.

I am pretty sure Kenny never set out to "write the book" on audio recording let alone compression so I am just very grateful for the exceptionally clear way he has dealt with a remarkable range of topics both "essential" and perhaps-not but potentially useful in the future.
His presence on the forum here is a bonus both for his knowledge but also his humour and generosity of spirit. So with that said I want to respond to his self-criticisms...

1. Intro: I have mixed feelings. It's good to have a audible signal to "Get Ready" (I am of a generation that listened to the radio and a common prelude to the story was "Are you sitting comfortably? Then I'll begin.") On the other hand it can be a little annoying if you listen to a few on the trot so perhaps keep an intro but shorter? Or just leave them as they are. It's fine.
2. I love the accent personally - gives character without any loss in clarity ever.
3. Too slow. I just did a very unscientific count of a random tutorial and got a figure of 170 words per minute. According to this that would be about perfect for radio so I am guessing about perfect for tutorials too?
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7426923.stm
4. L sounds. See my response (2).
5. Overtalks. Only rarely have I felt that and then it's usually when I already have some familiarity with the topic so I'd say it's actually a good tactic for anyone who isn't.
6. See (5).
7. I appreciate good editing. Probably worth doing it right so as to avoid ambiguity.
8. Voice intonation. Hmmm. The research I linked to does suggest rising intonation is perceived as indication weakness and being unsure! But I think it is a matter of degree and as I come from somewhere (the North of Ireland) where rising tones are endemic it makes me feel at home. So no problem there for me.
9. Sing songy? As (8) but also in this context isn't that a good thing?
10. Guilty totally. But I am glad he does.

Sometimes he is rational and his posts are useful, other times, he has been at the Agent Orange again & it shows.

But it obviously works in terms of attention getting if you look at the number of responses he has already gotten on this thread. Maybe we should just keep it going forever and give him something to smuggety-smug about when his meds aren`t working?
