v6 and Walter
Hi Theme experts.
With the help of this forum, I recently did a "jukebox" theme using Walter, by creating a new track layout showing a header design that features nothing but the track name in a large font.
Now with the new v6 theme features, I am very unsure how to do this in a Reaper v6 Default theme installation.
- will my "Walter modified file" simply work as before even with the new default theme ?
- is it even necessary to use Walter "Walter modified file" or can the new "Theme Adjuster" do this more elegantly ?
- if both no: should I simply add the few lines for the new track layout in the v6 file (after unzipping)
- are the instructions to use Walter still exactly the same with v6, or do I need to find additional documentation ?
Thanks,
-Michael

If all you need is a simple TCP with nothing but the track name, then yes the theme adjuster could do this quite easily, it gives you options to hide and show all elements on the TCP, as well as extending or shortening the track name panel. It's very simple to use - have you tried it?
Out of curiosity, why not just continue to use the theme that you already created for this purpose? The theme adjuster won't work with it, but the theme itself will work fine. My main theme was heavily modified, and it didn't change at all in version 6. Unless you're using a HiDPI display it should look exactly the same in 5 or 6, and even if you are using the new HiDPI settings, you could turn them off in Reaper if it messes up your theme (not that it should).

I would love to help but I am very new to WALTER and all that stuff.
Best thing to do is just try it. You can't break anything and if you don't like it you can go back to V5.99
Personally, I am sure now that I will be sticking with V6 for the changes that it brings to functionality.
cheers

Thanks a lot for the suggestions / affirmations of my guesses.

This is a very simple layout, just using this additional Track layout in the TCP. I could easily go on using the old state, but I always am willing to learn how to do it the best possible way.
OTOH on that laptop I switch back and forth between projects that either use the "Name on,y" TCP design or just a standard Reeper default layout (which I want to upgrade to v6).

OK, I did try to use the Theme Adjuster on the default v6 theme instead of Walter to get the TCP layout I want to see.
This obviously is the correct way to go with this issue in Reaper v6. Hioding aeverything bit the track name and setting 150 % create close to exactly what I want.
Unfortunately there are two things I seem not to be able to do.
The max value for "Name Size" is 170. I would need a lot more to decently show the Names of the imported songs with comments.
I can't seem to hide the Mute and Solo buttons and a tiny meter. In fact in this project I use a script that automatically mutes all but the last selected track, and the floating Master Volume shows the only active track's output level. Hence the information shown by these buttons and the tiny meter are perfectly worthless.

Sounds like quite specific requirements there Michael
Perhaps you will still need to use WALTER for specific elements.

If you don't require any of the moving/vanishing and reappearing elements from the 6.0 adjuster then why bother? Why not just use the theme you've already made if it does the job? I don't think the 6.0 theme is specially optimised to work with Reaper 6.0, other than the extra adjuster options (which it sounds like you don't need), so surely the 'best possible way' is just to use the theme you've already made for this specific job, rather then trying to dig into the WALTER code for the 6.0 theme?

This was obvious to me with v5 without the Theme Adjuster.
But with v6 the Theme Adjustrer is very close to providing these tweaks, which already is GREAT.
Hence I posted a feature request on that in the appropriate forum.

The theme adjuster is also just a script. WT mentioned before that you can have your own theme adjuster. I haven't actually tackled this yet.. haven't even attempted, but I've had it in the back of my mind that it would be a nice idea to take that script and modify it to my own themes' needs. So with that said, perhaps you can bump that 170 up higher. I don't really know though, because maybe there was a reason for that being the max.

I found it difficult choosing a sensible range of values for things like name length, because after I added the 'auto' settings then my testers tended to use that exclusively and not have an opinion on the fixed settings. The 'auto' setting has no maximum limit, and will update itself if you add new tracks or change track names. The only thing it requires is for the script to be running, even if it is quietly sat in the background docked in a hidden tab. Try it!

What exactly is the "auto" setting ?

In the case of the track names, it looks for the longest track name in your project and makes that the track name length. It has no upper limit. Let me just reiterate this crucial point : the script needs to be running, even if just docked and hidden, for it to keep updating the setting in real time.

Great ! Works perfectly !
Now one issue left: how to get rid of the Mute ad Solo Buttons ?
Thanks a lot,

Hi Michael
I had a look at this and it is a bit complicated.
I am assuming that you mean the Mute and Solo buttons in the Track Control Panel?
These buttons, in the TCP section are linked to the Meter.
I can turn off the Mute and Solo buttons at the end of the track panel by simply adding this code at the end of the Layout section:-
Code:
set tcp.mute [0]
set tcp.solo [0]
But the phase button is also in the same little section at right side of the track panel.
Even if you turn the phase button off that still leave a section at the end which will be still there, but empty.
So I started looking at the macro that is used to set up the various section in the track panel (calcTcpSecs) and the code in there is just too complex for me to understand at this time. But that is where you would have to start, I think.
Definitely one for White Tie, sorry

That is what I expected.
At best he would enhance the Theme adjuster with the options to hided the buttons.
Next Update ???

You cannot hide the mute/solo buttons (well, you can, but the space would remain.) Nor will they fold away when space gets small; this was one of the first things on the specification of what the theme needed to achieve, so its pretty deeply written in and would be a moderately complex mod to remove.

OK, not perfect, but I suppose we can live with that, or use Walter, as I did with the v5 default theme.

No, it would be far more complicated than removing them in the V5 theme. Sorry.

Ooops. OK.
So I could go on using the v5 theme, but that woud need to (hopefully automatically) switch themes based on the project. Is this possible ?

It seems in V6 rtconfig a lot of new things in code i never see them before.
If there is a change to find manual to tweak it?
I try making intuitive tweaks but for example i can't find the way how can i add Volume knob to 200%A TCP layout.
It's frustrating.
