Make sure in Item Settings that "Loop item source" is checked. Drag the right-hand edge of the clip to the right.
If not, please zip up a small problem audio clip and post it hare as an attachment so that we can have a look.

I loaded it into an empty project and dragged the right-hand edge and the clip looped as expected. Maybe there is some option that I have forgotten, but the clip is definitely loopable.
You might wish to edit / fade the end of the clip to get it to loop better,

By dragging the right-hand edge you mean drag the clip out longer?

The main problem i seem to get is the error message when i try to copy as a loop any idea what's causing that

If you want to loop a section of an item: - make a time selection
- hold ctrl + left mouse button -> drag the new item to another track
- select the new item
- run the action Item properties: Loop section of audio item source (sometimes this action has to be run twice)

Hi
Thanks i'll give your loop method a go do i need to split the item at all before dragging it into the other track though?
Ive been using item / copy loop of selected area of items & im getting the error message i mentioned
It does work if i fiddle with the time selection points but then im not getting the selection i wanted in the first place

No, it's not necessary to split the item. (It copies the section within the time selection and makes a new item automatically)
Here's an old thread about the error you got:

It doesn't work for me either. When I try to move the selection to a new track, the entire track is moved, not just the selection.

Sounds like quite a few Reaper users are having issues with it which is a shame it's a good feature if it only worked
Unless someone has some answers

Yes I see It works except when I extend the item it does not make a loop of just that slice of the item which was what I wanted using copy loop of selected item could this be because the loop selection points have to be exactly on the bar?
that seems to work except sometimes the point I want to make a loop of don't fall exactly on the bar..
Anyone?
I don't see why copy loop of selected item keeps bringing up the error message

Works here just like in animation.
Turn snap off an make your region..
Ctrl drag your selection down.
Click it to be sure it's active.
Run that action. Drag the right end... if it doesn't loop them click it again and re-run the action... drag right end.... I've done it several times and it seesm to work.
I even made loops of three grouped items.

It looks like the error happens when the item isn't selected, meaning you have to click on the audio item before copying the loop.
If you use Alt+RightClick drag to select the area, and do so over the item you wan't to copy/loop it will automaticaly select (highlight) the audio item which *should* fix your error.
Or if you choose your area using the normal left click drag method you need to be sure to click on the audio item before running the copy/loop.
Perhaps that'll help?
Edit: Another thing that would cause the error is if your selection area goes outside the boundaries of the audio item. If that's happening you may need to turn on snapping to the edges of audio items, or run the command Time Selection: Set time selection to items.
