Default QUESTION ABOUT INTERFACE, HELP IS APPRECIATED :)

Hi!
I am using an M-Audio, M-Track Eight and it works great!
But I feel that I have to upgrade to more inputs to fully record my drums.

I am think of buying another one of the M-Track Eight and use 2 of them.
(Have looked around the internet and have not found anything regarding the quiestion.)

Soo, I wonder if you can use 2 of the same interfaces in Reaper?
And if that is possible, how do I make it work?

Best regards/

Johannes

Hi Johannes, I think this depends on the interface, do they give you a way to link them together?

A few years ago, I had 3 "Q-Tens" that I could link together with "Word Clock", that gave me 24 mic/line inputs. It worked very well, but the Q-10s were designed to do that using Word Clock.

The thing about the Q-10s, one had to be the Master, the other the Slaves. But the software was also designed to do that.

With M-Audio, I don't know, maybe best to check with them to see what can be done.

If the documentation for the interface doesn't specifically state that you can do this, and under what operating systems it will work, then it won't.

Using ASIO4ALL to aggregated audio interfaces technically can be done, but will very rarely have the same low latency performance characteristics of a well designed native asio driver.

If you're running Reaper on a Mac I believe you can aggregate audio interfaces to achieve this but I've no idea how that works :-)

You can aggregate interfaces in either OS, but that isn't going to solve your problem. You will need some way to sync the clocks between them so they both have the same notion of time, and your interface doesn't provide for external clocking.

I'm curious as to what you're doing if 8 inputs isn't enough to track a drum kit, though. That's plenty to close mic your snare and kick, place overheads, and still leave you four channels to tinker with.

How do you have this thing set up?

FYI, You CAN sync clocks over a digital audio connection (SPDIF, AESEBU) or a data connection (firewire/thunderbolt/USB). Word clock is recommended for best stability and in some cases required to use HD sample rates in an aggregate.

There's a good possibility to at least have stable operation at 44.1k or 48k with an aggregate device with the devices sync'd over the digital audio connection or the data connection. Try it! (Try digital audio first. Patch a SPDIF or AES cable from one to the other. Choose digital input for clock source in the 'other'.)

Aside from the clocking issue there isn't a function to accept a digital signal from another set of mic pres, such as an ADAT optical port. The unit only has a single USB2 connection, which won't do the trick for either job : (

There is no digital on the M-Audio unit, and therefore no external clocking capabilities. I found that surprising for an 8 channel interface, but there ya go.
