Default Audio Device Issues - Broken Playback - ASIO issues

I have been using reaper to record VO for the past few years, but recently, whether by windows update or reaper update I am not sure, I started getting some strange things happening to my recorded audio. On playback, it pitches or maybe slows down my voice a bit and adds a digital sounding staggered breaking throughout. After a week of fighting with it, I was able to get a workaround using ASIO4All v2 and setting that as my audio system. That has worked, but it still isn't optimal for my needs.

The issue with ASIO is that it only allows me to use one audio application at a time. For example, if I have reaper open, I can not play a video on google chrome that my client wants me to match my VO with. I can minimize Reaper, and have the audio of the video playing, but if I have reaper active, recording, or even just open and idle on my screen, the video will say I give an audio rendering error and stop.

This has crippled my ability to use reaper for many of the needs that used to be no issue. Please help if you are able!

What interface are you using & were you previously using the interface`s own specific drivers in ASIO mode?
Every decent interface I have used over the years has accommodated multiple audio sources playing along at the same time as reaper with no issues.
I am pretty sure this is the case for most people, so it sounds like maybe you or windows accidentally tweaked something.
My most common experience with Win10 updates is that the updates have a nasty habit of reassigning my output to a random pair of the eight I have available rather than sticking with the one I always use, so it could be as simple as that. Give us a little more information on your system.

P.S. Welcome to the forums!

Not sure what you mean by interface.

I am on Windows 10 pro. my mic and headphones connect to my M-Audio Mtrack Mixer which connects via USB to my PC.

Until this issue arose, I was using the "direct sound" option under Options>Preferences>Audio>Device

M-Track is an interface.

Have you tried the M-Audio ASIO drivers?

I tried the M-Audio drivers, however, when I go into the device settings and select the Mtrack driver, it does not give me the ability to select the inputs. The drop down menu's are empty

Exactly which MTrack Mixer model do you have?

The drop down in device settings or the drop downs on tracks??
You have to make sure First and Last inputs are selected in the driver selection dialogue.

In the "first" and "last" dropdowns, there is nothing in those drop downs.

sounds like you might have it set as your windows default device (at a different sample rate to reaper) preventing reaper from seeing it?

Possibly, how do I find and change that?

Wait... I think that was it! I found the settings in windows, and it had set it to app exclusivity in windows. I still have to do some testing, but I think you've figured it out!

Ok, that fixed half of the problem, now the mic sounds pitched way down. I am sure that this is another windows conflict. Any ideas on what setting would affect this?

I got it. Windows was the culprit the whole time, I am sure we are collectively not surprised. The trick, was that it was working fine until Reaper was opened and that was when all audio went sideways.

Default mackie dl16s drivers

Hi, I’ve used reaper off and on for several years, though not so much til lately.
Yesterday I managed to screw something up, and now reaper doesn’t seem to detect the asio drivers for the mackie dl16 s mixer I use as an interface. I tried re-downloading and installing the mackie driver, and that didn’t help.
The mackie still functions perfectly as a mixer through my sound system. I’m not sure what to try next. My pc is an hp with windows 10, and it seems to be working fine in every other respect. Can anyone offer any suggestions?
Thanks in advance.

you're more likely to get help for your specific issue if you start a new thread, rather than jump on another one (especially one that doesn't have your equipment name in the title)

when you say it doesn't detect it, do you mean it doesn't show up at all in the list of driver options in Reaper?

Sorry.
You are correct. The driver doesn’t show up in reaper.

I should give more detailed instructions for fixing this since it messes up every time windows updates. (and I need to be reminded each time)

You can get to the right spot this way...

Start > Settings > System > Sound

Under Input > Device Properties

Additional Device Properties > Advanced

The issue is that it sets the frequency to something that is conflicting with Reaper. If you change the frequency in this drop down box it fixes the issue in Reaper. There can also be an issue with the exclusivity mode settings, but that is hit and miss with the various windows updates.

I leave this here for my future self... who will undoubtedly be back to figure out what I did last time.
