Pick any track from Frank Zappa (early '70s SG period), Tony Iommi, or Angus Young.

Derek Trucks (slide guitar).
Louis Bertignac (a skilled french SG lover).
...

It's amazing how this guitar is underrated these days.
The neck is a marvel, it's lightweight and it sounds good.

But I myself am a LesPaul owner, what's wrong?

Let`s be realistic here - it isnt down to the guitar or the amp, it starts with the player. sadly there is no way round that.

Straight Talk...

"Fugazi"-era Ian MacKaye is absolutely right up there with this list.

This is .. and I say this with nothing but respect... almost a complete load of bollocks. I say almost...because the caveat..as I see it.. would be if you were just judging the sound of two lads playing an SG through a regular non overdriven amp. Then! and only then might your extraordinary hypotheses be accurate. Its almost entirely down to the guitar and amp...how it actually sounds.

Also...the wood from which the guitar is made makes no difference thats just marketing. I played an entirely maple SG and it sounded the same as a regular one.

And to end of this interjection ..which frankly was a pleasure because I wish to put an end once and for all to these ridiculous assertions ...

THe best sound from an SG ever is delivered by this man

Default Dear Ivan and Cosmic

neither of your points are wrong.

so I updgraded from a epiphone lp copy
*btw i was pefectly happy with this guitar
tuning intonation and note pitch were all acurate

after playing the sg for half a day
I am either a better guitarist or at least sound like one

theres a reason they call a guitar an instrument
the neck on the sg is ridiculously sensitive
and the hardwood feels much better than paint

but as Ivan pointed out
Its not like I acctually improved

anyway if anyone wants to hear the diffence for themselves
i can record the same riff on each guitar

Default you have to mention what distortion pedal they use i guess

I would say angus young has one of the most iconic gutar sounds ever
of course Tommy Iomi was way more of a pioneer, but you dont hear that many good recordings of tommy live

of course both sounds are dependent on what they use for distortion

ill definately check these guys out
Derek Trucks (slide guitar).
Louis Bertignac

Default SG--She's a BAD b----, better show respect!

IMHO, guitar choice is a matter of personal feel, I think you can take two SG's and there will be a difference in tone and feel, as is the case with any guitar. Sometimes it's a magic, can't put a finger on it thing, where you pick up a particular guitar and the "butterfly comes out of the chrysalis", it hits you in the f'n soul and makes you play or at least interpret your playing as something you haven't experienced before. Guitar sound on a song has soooo many variables, the particular specs on the guitar, the wood, how the pickups are wound, the wiring and electronics in it, how the player holds the guitar, finger pressure on the strings, etc. etc. etc. Frank Marino is a MONSTER no doubt, his skill undeniable, Carlos Santana, Frank Zappa, Gary Clark Jr., Angus Young, Tony Iommi and every other SG player has got something, is it the guitar alone? Nah. Eric Clapton with Cream, Pete Townsend. The sound you hear, that hits you right, also depends on how the song is mixed, EQ'd the frequencies of other instruments and how the guitar notes interact with the other instruments.

But, man, if that SG hit's you right, PLAY IT AND LOVE IT! She will give you love as you show her love. Peace to all the people of the world, especially those that get hit with music all the time, hit so hard, yet they feel no pain.

Had Angus fking Young played any other guitar, you'd still love him and be talking about that one. Guitars don't make music by themselves, that really, really, really matters.

Personally, I question anyone even wanting a famous guitar player's tone (not that anyone here is), we already had that guy, I want to know what unique thing YOU have to bring to the musical table. If one finds themselves wanting someone else's tone, 90% of that is wanting how they play without realizing it and/or confusing the tone with the playing.

Touch makes such a difference to the sound, tone and articulation of any guitar. Shattering all the metacarples in my right hand 5 yrs ago in May has changed pretty much everything for me.

Changing guitars the feel of a neck, change of scale length sometimes also changed how things got played the longer scale of a Strat vs the Gibson subtle but there. That and the weight of a Les Paul on your vertibrae as you get older (defo noticable these days to me).

On best SG player and sound ... Well Angus has to be up there but I like Derek Trucks slide too... So different horses as they say. .

i ve played my share of cheap gibsons over the years in guitar shops
and I was never that impressed

i got my guitar from a repair/set up guy though
and the responsiveness of the kneck and feel and ballence intonation
and look....its a perfect guitar for me

its really like the diffence between playing guitar and being a guitar player. Its an actual instument

The OP was just out of curiosity,..i dont even "own" a distortion pedal

(grin) You just demolished your own assertion that it was "all down to the guitar and amp", dear boy.
Now just re-read what I wrote & then re-read what your reply actually said, rather than what you think it said.
No disrespect, of course

That`s TONY Iommi. And he had some major issues with his fingers, which had to affect his particular sound. have a read-up on him - interesting bloke.

P.S. I have played some fantastic SGs over the years & briefly owned a gem of a Tokai SG, which I sold shortly after buying it. I am/was a bass player primarily & every SG I have ever played would not stay in tune for me because my playing style is more like black belt karate - VERY heavy-handed. I could pull the thing out of tune just by squeezing the neck too hard! Shame, as they were all very easy to play.

It seems to me that the consensus of this thread is that it is not the tool, but the use of the tool that matters.

There are a few good live recordings of TONY Iommi and Black Sabbath. I will admit that they are few and far between and that bootleg audience recordings for Sabbath tend to be some of the worst recordings you might ever hear. Live at Last was released by their label against their wishes and is a very flawed recording.

This all went down in an era when recording was hard to begin with. These guys had loud shows of course and that made it that much harder to capture. Basically 99% of what went down was never recorded even close to properly. Sucks doesn't it!

The 3 TV broadcasts are probably still some of the best surviving stuff. Paris 1970. California Jam 1974. Don Kirshner's Rock Hour 1975.

I get a perfect ACDC sound with my solodallas storm pedal and my Marshall dsl40cr using an agile Les Paul. I'm sure you can do the same with an SG

I, too, joined the Gibson owners group last week. LP Studio in Smokehouse. Very happy with it.

Gary Moore used a lot of guitars, but loved his Gibsons.

I didn't care for the SG guitar, but I had a vintage SG bass at my house for a while and it's still the best bass I've every played. Idk how something so light could sound so beefy.

I'm not a guitar player but I agree with "too many variables". Plus different people have different taste.

When I think of the SG I picture Angus Young in my mind.

If you listen to a CD (or MP3, etc.) and you don't know anything about the band you'd ever know what guitar is being played.

I saw a video clip once with someone who'd met Eric Clapton. The guy wasn't happy with the sound of his guitar rig but Eric Clapton picked-up the guitar and suddenly it sounded great and he said "it sounded like Eric Clapton".
