stereo width
i don't understand what this does...
does it go beyond the 100% Left or 100% Right of panning? sounds a bit silly to ask

No, it doesn't.
At the extreme left, the width control makes the sound be full stereo but with the channels reversed.
At the middle, it makes the sound mono.
At the extreme right, the original stereo image is preserved.
If you want the "larger than possible" stereo effect, you will need to use a plugin that can do that.

thanks xenakios, that seems a very clear answer i just lack knowledge to understand it
at the middle, wasn't it mono already before the width control?

The width control doesn't do anything for sounds that are already mono.

think of it as being a control that goes from reverse stereo to stereo.
the middle of that being Not stereo.

But if the source sound is mono, the knob will still do nothing to make it stereo...
I predict the original poster will next say "But I have a file on the track that has 2 channels, so it is stereo, right?!". To which the answer is : Having a 2 channel file doesn't yet make the sound stereo, the channels also have to have a difference between them. That is, you can have 2 channel file that has a mono sound because the channels contain identical audio.
