Same hotkey for different elements?
Right now I have 'S' for split items. Why can't I have 'S' to split automation items as well?

Make a custom action with 2 actions:
one will be this one and the second one will be "Envelope: Split automation items"

I'll give it an honest shot, but I only want to affect whats in focus.

My best solution so far is to use Mouse modifiers, instead of a keyboard shortcut. So at least its the same mouse modifier and click to do the same action to the elements.
Not exactly ideal but it's better than nothing.

Yeah, I don't think there's any other way to do it right now, unless maybe it can be done with a script.
You might ask in the "JSFX and ReaScript Discussion" section, there are some pretty good script programmers that may offer to help.

This solution would just be good to be true, but i just tested it and it doesn't work for me:
- I select an Automation Item, (lying under an Item), put edit cursor somewhere in Automation Item.
- I execute the Custom Action you proposed.
- Outcome:
The Automation item is split at edit but the Item that lays above the Automation Item is also split (although i had unselected it beforehand.
Maybe i am doing something wrong though ..

I thought OP asked for THAT. No, you're doing everything right.

I'll have to live with how it is for now.
Not really sure how a script would really fix this. Maybe I should do some reading into it.
I def want to see version 6 expand and clean up existing features. Example for this situation, actions based on which element is in focus.

I suppose my wording should have been better. Thanks for the reply.

It should be possible with script, I suppose.

If Breeders mouse context functions still work, or can be made to work with AIs, it should just be a case of checking what the mouse is doing and executing automation item split or item split actions.
Might need to visit Breeder’s source code though...

Here it just splits the item or the AI, whichever is selected. It only splits both if they are both selected.

nofish did some work toward adding AI support to BR_GetMouseCursorContext: https://github.com/reaper-oss/sws/issues/922.
In the meantime it's still possible to detect whether the mouse cursor is over an AI using BR_GetMouseCursorContext_Position and _Envelope. I use this in my Automation item selection bundle script. (However if two or more AIs are overlapping there is no way to tell which one is truly under the mouse.)
