__________________________________________________

October is here, and so is a new reaMixed contest. Thanks to all who participated last month, and thanks for putting up with some growing pains with the new site.

This month's contest features Kane Guru by West End Blend, courtesy of grundton (winner of the September contest).

You can download the multitrack from the website or clicking on this link.

No prize this month, aside from the customary track-picking privileges for the next month's contest.

Please note: We've added a new rule, no voting for your own mix.

Happy mixing!
-Daryl

Default Life (and unfortunately Death) gets in the way...

Hey all,

Looking forward to participating in this month's contest. First of all...my apologies for not participating in last months contest (mixing and feedback). My mother is in the final stages of her life and on Hospice. We have been working nearly every day for the past month to get her house ready to sell and only just got it on the market last week.

I can't promise my head will be in this 100% as there is still much left to do and she is only allowed 2 people to visit once a day. So myself and my 2 brothers and their families are competing for those spots as you might imagine.

Anyway...I need to get my head into something so I don't sit here thinking about it. So this will hopefully be a welcome distraction. I DO have a very cool idea to add to a song that involves ONLY plugins...so it would be 'legal' with regard to the rules. However, not sure the type of music chosen will lend itself to this idea...so it may have to wait for a different contest month to show up. Once I get a chance to use it I will share the idea and set-up with anyone who thinks it was interesting...

Sorry to be so cryptic, but I really want to see if this thing has the WOW factor that I believe it will! Once I've had a chance to use it I will do a "Mixing with Paulie" episode to explain how it works so anyone interested will be able to do it. It's fairly simple and I'm frankly amazed that nobody has done it yet. More to come soon hopefully and I'm downloading the tracks for this month now. So maybe once I listen to it, I'll decide that I CAN do it this month? Fingers crossed!

I've changed the upload file size limit to 85MB since this month's files are coming in a bit larger. Let me know if you have any problems.

First of all: thanks for carrying on with the contest!
Really missed it, especially during lock down.

Got no time to tinker with the mix anymore, so I tried to upload it.

Did everything according to the check list of the submit-page,
hit the submit button but nothing appeared to happen.

So please tell me, if you didnīt recieve my mix.
(and forgive me, if you got three copies )

Cheers,

WT

Hmm, I just checked, and the upload appears to be working. But I didn't receive yours, WaveTrans.

If you don't mind trying again it should work now. Otherwise, send me a private message here or use the reamixed.com contact form to send me a dropbox/google drive link for your file.

So far I've got mixes from:

grundton
rmk.gdy
Sergei
javiramallo
Roman Bokij
Pedro

5 days to go!

Just started mixing tonight. Nice song, and really well recorded! The only thing that's giving me trouble right now is how loud the hi hat is in the snare mics. What are you all doing to deal with that?

Thanks for checking; I uploaded again and now I got a message saying that it had worked.

Seems there was a problem with the acceptance/recognition of the email adress.
After re-entering my email adress and clicking on the other fields it suddenly worked.
The frame of the email adress entry field is still red, though; canīt say if that is some kind of error indication.

Thanks, looks like I still need to iron out a bug in the email validator.

First timer here (in many ways). Is there a good way to know what all JSFX come pre-installed? I think I only use 2 or 3 that I had downloaded after installing REAPER, but prefer to be sure. I suppose I could have a folder with everything I used including the stock plugins.

Do your best to send what you think might be not included with reaper. If anything is missing, I'll ask you to send it when I'm checking the files in.

Voting starts in about 5 minutes, hopefully I didn't break the site in adding a section to disable voting on your own mix. Let me know if something's not working or if you have any questions. Good luck!

Hi, I think it should show up the name I chose I am on the voting page.

This kind of login seems to me to be a good idea, since majority of voters are also participants.

There's about 2.5 days left, get your votes in!

Has anyone downloaded the project files from last month? if so, let me know if you were able to use them on a PC, someone contacted me saying they were having problems, and I don't have access to a PC at the moment.

Congrats to pepe44, our October winner! I was very impressed with several of the mixes. And I think in a lot of ways this was the trickiest one to mix in recent months.

Visit the site to see comments on all the mixes:

pepe44, I'll be contacting you shortly to pick next month's song.

Hey Pepe, enhorabuena desde Espaņa. I Am enjoying very much with your session, is Great.
Iīll very grateful if you could explain in any way your use of the ReaEq all pass filter. I can see the phase graph but.. What do you are getting or when you tray to use this technique?

Thanks you in advance!

In the other hand.. Congrat to everyboy. This is so so so enriching...

Daryl, again thank you for the effor.

Waiting for the next.

GG everyone. Pepe's mix was very good!

I ended up not having much time to mix this one, and did most of my mix in the two hours right before it was due, so apologies for turning in a not-so-great mix this time .

A lot of people mentioned that my mix was too reverb-y, but the only verbs I used were a snare plate and a short verb on the horns, so almost all the reverb sound was just natural bleed. I figured gating was the right way to tame all the mic bleed, but I couldn't get my gates to sit right, so I was looking forward to checking out the files from this month to see how others handled this.

I'm looking at Pepe's file and the only gates I see are on the horns, and their effect is pretty subtle. This is pretty surprising to me, so I'm wondering if he might chime in on how he controlled the ambience so well or where I went wrong. After seeing his file, the only thing I can think is maybe I used too much compression, which brought out too much of the ambient sound in the mics.

Hey all. Thanks for the nice comments.
The mix was really a challenge, im a reaper user but i never use only reaper plugins, has many of you can imagine, we all have our tools.
It was a really nice experience for me.

The use of all pass filters allows one to alter the phase relation between frequencies on different instruments tracks. Like this you can ,by ear, listen what is the best combination for you.
They are very low CPU filters and very effective. ReaEQ allows you to make a lot of this filter types in one instance of the eq.
I find it a great method over the traditional corrective eq in most cases.

The routing is simple. Tracks - Buses - 2Track.

Iīm very pleased for the comments and i hope it helps .
Music is about emotion and sharing that emotion .

All the best.

Firstly, Congratulations to the winners!

Mixing this song was very interessting but not easy for me. I also struggled with bleed and I too have the feeling that compression is at least part of the problem since I remember snare popups in connection with bleed from the singers mics. Canīt say I really see how pepeīs done it but I daresay itīs due to a really good balance between tracks which uses the bleed instead of trying to avoid it but Iīm just guessing.

Looking forward to the next challenge.
